The main breeds for pork and bacon production are:

  • Large white
  • Landrace
  • Duroc
  • Welsh
  • Berkshire
  • Tamworth
  • Hampshire
  • Wessex saddleback

Commercial pig producers may keep these as pure breeds or cross any combination of them.

Feral pigs (Captain Cookers) are farmed on small blocks and the Kunekune is also popular. These pigs grow more slowly and have much fatter carcasses.

Many of the above breeds have got down to very small populations and the NZ Rare Breeds Association is farming them to preserve the gene pool.
