rat-proofing compost

I am considering ways to keep rats from the compost, and it looks like steel mesh of small enough size surrounding the heap completely is really the only way I can think of. Has anyone tried this? I was thinking of something like this ( meshstore.co.nz/welded-wire/w004-welded-...tre-5-55mm-openings/ ) under the pile and in a frame around and over it.

Way back when we had rats getting into out compost bin (round plastic thing) I found just a layer of ordinary chicken wire kept them out so the stuff your looking at should do fine, the only thing was I put a layer of grass clippings in first so they couldn't pull stuff through the mesh

Thanks. We won't be using a bin, because we tend to have very large piles of stuff all at once. That is the way I garden: neglect for months, then do loads of weeding and mulching and hope things survive till next year. We we have to create a barrier on all sides. I have heard of rats burrowing to get under barriers if the re is something they want a lot.
We will be adding kitchen waste to it and want to avoid the rats enjoying that.
