Another thought. Try approaching any local dog trialling clubs, either go to club events or contact their secretary.

No. I've been checking the websites every so often. There's suitable dogs in the South Island, but that's too far for us.

Inger ...have you seen this gorgeous boy ???
He is in Gisborne but that is not insurmountable :)

Diesel – Gisborne

About Diesel:
Diesel is a medium-sized, male Border Collie, aged 3 years old.

Description:
Diesel was bought to be a farm dog but due to us having kids has had no training and is bored and in need of a loving pet or lifestyle home. He is super high energy and needs a job to do and plenty of exercise. He is very intelligent and doesn’t take much to train, but needs someone experienced to carry his training on.

Is Diesel used to children? Yes.
Is Diesel used to cats? Don’t know.
Is Diesel toilet-trained? Don’t know.
Is Diesel used to stock? Yes.
Is Diesel used to chickens? Yes.
How well does Diesel get on with other dogs? OK.
Diesel lives in Gisborne, North Island.
A bit about Diesel’s personality:
Diesel is super friendly and loyal but a bit nervous of new people. Can be a bit boisterous so needs a firm hand but is incredibly loving and intelligent. Diesel has always got on well with our other dogs but has the type of personality that may not back down if he’s challenged by another dog. Has always lived outside but I’m sure would love being an inside dog too.

He sounds like a useful dog for someone who has a big farm and the knowledge of how to train a dog properly.

Our problem is that we don't have stock work to do every day, only a day or so, here and there. I have never trained a dog, just worked a dog that my Dad trained, when growing up.

Since getting lifestyle blocks a number of years ago, we've had three retired working dogs in succession and that has worked well for us. We can give a retired dog enough work to keep them happy, but we don't have to work them hard every day, in order for the dog to not be bored. Which is the way it is for a young dog. So although Diesel looks to be a great dog, he wouldn't suit our needs and we couldn't keep him fully occupied to use up all that energy.

Thanks for thinking of us though. :)

We still might be interested, as finding a good dog is hard, so if we have to travel to Taupo, we would certainly consider it.
I'm tied up for the next few weeks, so can I email you at the end of the month and we can take it from there?

If you can send me your email address to inger(at)keymer.name I can contact you by email and we can arrange a visit.

Thanks so much for posting, we really need another dog.

Sorry, I haven't had access to a computer for a while, so didn't see this post. Sarge is a bit young for us, we wouldn't have enough work to keep him fully occupied. But thanks for thinking of us.

Yes, I saw those posts Hawkspur, but I was thinking that a heading dog would be more suitable for us.

One is a heading/huntaway X so might be worth checking to see whether he works more as one than the other.

Yes, but he's 12 years old, so realistically, how long would we have him for?

I'll wait to check out what Hawai has to offer. If I wasn't stuck in Auckland for the next few weeks, we could go and visit sooner.
