Well I'd be delighted if public sales of fireworks got banned, and there were a few properly run public displays instead.

Its the constant banging and whooshing away for weeks on end which is annoying, and no manner of protection can work for your stock when you don't know when the damned things are going to be let off. [:(!]

We never had issues in our area until more townies arrived, and some of the idiotic things which happened when they did arrive will defy any common sense. [:(!] The trouble is most of the people letting the things off are so selfish that they never consider others points of view so they just do as they please with their neighbours paying for their 5 minutes of "entertainment" with costly vet bills and in some cases the loss of valuable breeding stock, not to forget all the fence and property repairs needed.

They should tax the things very highly in the meantime to help pay for some of the emergency services, then hopefully less people will buy them and eventually they will get banned from public sale.

Animals rule our place... cows, calves, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, donkeys, chickens, ducks... the list goes on
...."lifestyle block like" 25 or so acres around the house attached to a rather large farm with dairy drystock & a 600 cow dairy conversion :)....1500 acres to call home

This is true. Last night in our area, a car was being driven with the fireworks being lit within the car and ''exploding'' as they went up the road concerned..... someone please present me with a sensible debate to justify this?

Someone around here is letting off fireworks. Geoff has gone to check on the goats. It's crazy when even though we have 220 acres we can't get away from it...we know from previous years that goats do not like fireworks :(

My cow quietly continued her labour while the neighbours were letting off pathetic (but no doubt expensive) fireworks. She just moved away so the big trees obliterated her view of them. Sensible animal.

It's pretty nasty here too, blowing a very cold southerly with hail a while ago. The sun's lovely, but there's inevitably a draught blowing the warm air out of my office!

Fire was lit last night and again just now.

The Kiwi Morning Cup of Tea Maker went to sit outside (as he usually does) when preparing the morning cuppa and quickly came back inside advising it was whucking cold and winter weather... beats the current bush fire worry from where I come from.

Anyone catch the firefighter talking about the South Auck house that caught fire (tile roof) when a firework from a neighbour landed in the gutter and sset fire to the building paper in the roof?

Who is responsible for that damage I ask? reason says the neighbour, but having read some legislation recently on damage caused by fire, it seems the property owner is now responsible.

Did you know, that what you thought I said, was not what I meant :S

As you may recall we are in the roofing industry. Back in Aussie if the insurer can prove ''you'' haven't conducted maintenance such as clearing blocked/full gutters, general maintenance and upkeep they will deny the claim and any resulting damage.

Its getting the same way here. When our rented rural house burnt down several years ago (previously posted on LSB) we had to supply all of our maintenance records and fortunately because we were still living in aussie, the work was carried out by others and recorded for payment purposes.

If we were to work on a rental I would now get the tenant to sign to say the work had been carried out (for future reference and proof).

I have an opinion on insurers but its not appropriate to this thread. [}:)]

And having suffered a house fire, the investigation works takes months and specialists are called in. their findings are extremely interesting and quite often are in contrary to those on the ground. I would wait for the final report before believing what is on the news.

I hope everything has quietened down. We had a very interesting Guy Fawkes season, firstly a new property so we had the horses here close to town...close enough that we can see and hear all the fireworks activity. To add to that I have a young one in who up until recently was totally unhandled and pretty labelled as walking dog food. His human interaction had consisted of seeing them from afar - this sometimes happens with horses bred on large open stations. An extremely well bred feral horse.

It was interesting watching the reactions, both horses ran the fencelines looking for ways to get closer to the neighbours bonfire fireworks party in the paddock next to them. Not a reaction I expected, both were fascinated by the lights and noise. Our neighbours love fireworks and this went on for a week. By the end of the week the horses moved their ears and kept on grazing with every rocket.

It gave me some thoughts, you could try disco strobes to desensitise over a couple of months in the paddock, the lights seem to affect them more than the sounds. If your horse is gun shy then its always a smart idea to desensitise them there as well. They are big animals who more often than not have a flight response. It is always better to minimise the risk and expose them with desensitisation rather than protect them and have what could be fatal consequences.

What I find interesting about guy fawkes is that John Key made a big thing about it and it was to be discussed on that very day whether or not to ban it. Nothing more heard from that promise [maybe he was too busy texting Cameron slater, or not, who knows]
But regarding feral horses and guy fawkes, the horses that I have found coped the best have been the Kaimanawa. And you dont get a lot more feral than that. I have taken a number from the various round ups and guy fawkes has never been an issue for them
