Yes - maybe a mixture of trees ....I think watering is definitely wise here in the hot Canterbury summers...

make sure you are planting now and not in a months time.
May is the best time to plant up here after we get our first rains, the trees can spend the whole of the winter establishing a good root network before they start growing in the spring.
You are a bit later with spring down south but I dont plant trees now after july

where are you, how deep is your soil, how old are you, do you get very strong wind on a regular basis, is it dry in summer etc etc etc.
why did the trees die? perhaps they were not suited to the area.
how old are you is about will you be around to see your trees when they have grown enough for you to appreciate them.
you need to plant trees that will grow in your conditions. there are many types of eucalyptus which grow differently in different areas so if you want eucalyptus then you need to select the best one or ones for your area.
it is not simple. spend plenty of time finding out because if you get it wrong it can cost alot of time and maybe money.
