My family spent a good part of the weekend at the bach watching a rabbit pick the stems off and eat them like sucking up a piece of spaghetti, with the flower disappearing last. He/she was hopping around the lawn picking the flowers in preference to the grass, which suggests they are aren't very toxic, though in this case I think the weed was the hawkbit member of the family.

My understanding of it is that it would be fine in your hay. It becomes toxic when the plant itself is stressed as in a drought etc. As we have regular droughts here, I have come across horses that have had the stringhalt attack but have also pulled through. I have it or the whole dandelion family all through my pasture and my animals have no problems. You can find out more about it here
www.massey.ac.nz/massey/learning/departm...cause-stringhalt.cfm - sorry haven't mastered the link thingy or just google - catsear and stringhalt
Hope it helps :)
