Christmas pork was created by Gazrus
Hi guys, does anyone know or able to help me get a pig for the Christmas spit in franklin area.
Never done it before so would need some help 'prepare' plus added complication of freezers full of beef and lamb at moment so need to pick up as close to day as possible.
All recommendations appreciated.

Due to the home kill rules, you would need to own and be the primary carer for the pig before you are allowed to kill it for a spit.

"Only animal owners who are actively engaged in the day-day maintenance of an animal, or other animals of the same kind, for a period of at least 28 days immediately preceding the date of the homekilling of the animal may use homekill and recreational catch service providers to kill and/or process that animal."
Taken from here
www.lifestyleblock.co.nz/lifestyle-file/...ill-regulations.html
Otherwise you will need to contact your local butcher to supply you with a whole pig. Sadly to buy a pig for a spit from a hobby farmer without the 28 day care period would now be illegal. There are many reasons for this that are covered in the link above.
You may find with the freezer space problem if you buy, 'finish' (28 days) and home kill the pig through your local home kill provider, they may be able to store it for you in their chillers (for a fee of course).
Good luck with the xmas plans!

have a club/sledge hammer and some wire on hand.
The bar doesnt always go through as easily as youd like.
And have about 2litres of marinade in the fridge with a paintbrush to glaze while cooking.
Youll have to plan cooking times around the size you get, and the day accordingly. Depending on what machine you hire youll likely need a 12v source for the motor. High current battery charger will work.

....... from a nasty experience, choose a natural bristle brush or one of those weird rubber cooking ones...... your standard nylon bristle paint brush can melt nicely with a bit of heat! [xx(]

You can by them directly from the butcher, which is much easier than buying a live pig and then having to go through the process.

2 horses, 15 Chickens, 1 goat, 2 pigs, 1 cat

If it helps any, I know our local Pak n Save are doing whole pigs at 7.98/kg. Just happened to see the sign tonight so thought I'd mention

$7.98/kg seems like a pretty sharp price. A 50lb spit pig will probably run you around $150+$40ish to have it killed and cleaned.

At $7.98/kg from pak'n'save that same 50lber (22ish kg) would be $175.
Sure it'll be factory farmed pork but you can be pretty certain it will be (relatively) healthy and disease free, which may not be the case with some of the pigs being sold live. No trailering of a live pig to the homekill, loading/unloading etc.

Worth thinking about.

Try Tuakau Quality Meats. Jim is pretty darn awesome and should be able to help. Tip: just baste with ginger ale. The cheap stuff, put a couple of little holes in the lid and squirt it from time to time.
