Normally the hen will mother them and peck and growl at you.. If it was me I would take them away in case she harms them , give her an egg and see if she settles again and than try later. When I introduce chikkies I let them cheep a bit outside so she knows there is something up .And try again in the dark.. I am sure some of the poultry peeps on the list will have a few ideas.

Michele, is she still not showing and caring for the chicks?
If you go to take one away, what does she do? Is she at all protective? Is she allowing them to huddle under her body for warmth?

If not, can you put them in a box/ cage/ hutch/whatever with some warm bedding and a low wattage bulb suspended to keep them warm at night? They will need chick crumbles not chook pellets and plenty of clean water.
Let us know how it is going.

Yes there is life without the Mother Hen, they are pretty resilient.. I have a plastic fish box and hang a light in it and a jar lid or old ciggy ash tray with water.. they will be fine and you can try again later

Try putting them besides or behind her and they will snuggle under instead of standing out in front of her cheeping

Is she a first time chook mother?
Can you leave the eggs with her then put the chicks back at night so she has both to sit on, she might then think they have hatched under her & stay settled on the nest and they can cuddle in while she minds the eggs? Then review the situation in a day or two re removing the eggs and leaving the chicks perhaps.

What HH has suggested works really well for us, and has worked every time, usually one or two times a year we go through this, nearly always with a first time mum.

I would put the chicks into a little box with warmed wheatpack inside. Put it in front of the hen and let them talk to her without her seeing them inside. Leave them there for an hour. They need to bond by talking to each other. It usually needs to be in first 24 hrs though. This comes as recommended practice from the UK poultry people.
Lets know how you go/

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

Hens know that their eggs are about to hatch because they can hear them cheaping from inside their eggs. That's why putting eggs under her and the box of chicks were she can hear them, wotks. Only put the chicks under her at night. That way she will think that they hatched during the night and will smell like her, so she'll accept them better.

Are the two chicks that the hen pecks at, a different colour? Or do they call out more than the others?

Hi Michele,

what breed is your hen? Araucana? Or an Araucana cross? If yes - she probably won't adopt.

Otherwise - if the hen doesn't accept the chicks often means that the chicks haven't learnt chook language yet. As the others have said - under a light during the day and back again at night and check on them in the morning. I'd try up to three times, if the hen still doesn't accept she probably won't.

This season I had a couple of hens who didn't adopt chicks and neither of them is an Araucana. So it is possible but not the rule.
