Two geese have made their way to our garden. We think theyve come from a neighbour who seems to have moved out. We're happy to keep them but it looks like they've been raised on grain. We have much more grass so are hoping they'll be happy on grass alone. Does this sound right ?
When we bought our property we inherited a goose. She lived out in the middle of the farm and ate nothing but grass. Over a period of about a year, she finally made her way to the cowshed where she would be fed maize. She was approximately 22 when she died. I missed her honking and performances so got another. She comes in once a day, in the evening, for her maize and other than that, she finds her own food. We do have a river run through the property and I'm quite sure that along with the wild ducks she's teamed up with, she does fairly well out of that, along with the grass.
So yes, your geese with survive very well on grass and if you want to throw them something like maize once a day to keep them around and happy, do so.
