Wow!

I'm a bit surprised that you pulled it out before the tops started to go yellow and fell over?? Are they ok like that? - I mean - will they dry out just fine and keep well?

the tops had started to yellow and one had gone to seed, so that is why I took it out. It is hung up to dry so should be fine. I also have another crop that haven't pulled out yet that was planted later.

Oh, yes, I now see a tinge of yellow on their tips in the second photo. I always waited until the whole top was yellow-ish and fell over. Will harvest a few earlier then and see what happens.

I thought if you pulled them early ie. not completely died back then yes they're fine to eat now but they won't store well over the winter because the skins are not papery dry ??? I could be wrong though lol

They should store fine, you just bunch it together and hang it up in a draughty dry place until the skin dries, then you can store it.

WOW awesome!!! I can't wait to pull my garlic up -
They are all really dried off. We move house in 1 months time, so want to pull it up before then obviously.

If they are fully dried off now - shall I pull them and hang them??

Hi Kai, when did you plant these? I planted a batch in March (I think), the stems are as fat as leeks and the lower leaves are starting to dry off but we have had no scapes yet. Ant tips how to tell when they are ready? I have never grown garlic successfully before :)

Actually I said I had a later crop in, I was wrong, the earlier crop is the one I am waiting to be ready. The earlier crop went in late June, this was probably a month later. The land we have has been in pasture for a number of years, but prior to that it was market garden land and although it is its first season as a veggie patch and I haven't done anything to improve the soil, even after less than a year, the crops are showing how good the land is.

Just read in get growing that you should harvest when the leaves are around 50% yellow as this is the optimum for keeping abilities.
