hi
my pc will not accept ie7 installation/update in puts an error page on my desktop, which takes u2 Msoft webpage.

the error code that i got was 0x3f5

the info on the says that there is a problem with my registry and that i will have to adjust it for ie7 to b able to install.

1. i do not want to as i have not have the experience/or the bottle to do this.

2. i was told by a i.t. mate at work just reformat your pc with reinstalling my software, he said it will wipe everything on your pc and it will get rid of all the junk that has built up on the hard drive to which i replied i do not have any discs form Msoft as all sofware was pre-installed. he looked a bit stunned at this.

is it worth taking it back to the place of purchase and getting it reformatted[?] or buying a registry cleaner/fixer

does Msoft have a utility that can fix this problem that i can download
bit lost here, need some good advice

Rob

Hi Rob,

This is quite a nasty problem. There is a whole lot of information on it here:

aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=22447

There are many things you can try and some of them are pretty technical. However, if you click on to the NEXT page of that forum as per the link at the bottom, there is some mention about the latest security patches from Microsoft which have fixed the problem at least for one user who goes by the name Angelrat.

Maybe your experience will be similar. My desktop and laptop have both been downloading security updates today so you may be able to get those updates downloaded onto your PC and have the problem fixed within the next day or two.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers,
Grant.

Hey Grant just wanted to say I'm up and running with world exchange! I rang tech support and did it all myself!!

Just got to sort out Outlook express to download my e-mails to my computer, they said something about a remote server!

Digby's hubby will come and do that for me!
So Thanks for doing the rest of it! ;)

Yes, I can help. Install Firefox.

www.mozilla.com/en-US/

And while you're at it, install Thunderbird and cease using Outlook Express.

Sorry, installing Firefox won't fix this problem.

Your IT dude needs to think a little more before advising you to utterly nuke your system and start again, it is not a job for a novice. There are many files to backup before reinstalling windows - email archives, bookmarks, personal files etc. For most people a complete reinstall is usually a huge backwards step to fix a small problem. Grant knows, and can guide. Or better is to track down a local guru who won't charge you the earth to fix the install problem, one who can understand the links Grant gave above. Remember to burn/backup what you can't afford to lose, regularly.

That said, Firefox is a far superior product to Explorer, and I use it with a vengance. There are still some websites out there which don't display properly, and others where the embedded buttons and actions don't work at all under Firefox. This is why your explorer may still need to be fixed.
But there is a workaround. Goto addons.mozilla.org/extensions.php , and find IE Tab. This tool basically lets you use the IE engine within firefox, without firing up Explorer.
While you are there, get FlashBlock, and AdBlock. Your browsing experience will be the better for it.

I see you shiver in anticip......................................................................................ation
