I dont get any error message! I have an empty window with that little coloured square in the top left corner indicating a broken photo link(?) with the word "done" in the bar at the bottom of the window.

you're trying to open PDF's online? if firefox, click on "Tools" then "Options" then select the blue globe "content" tab and the "Manage files" option at the bottom. scroll to PDF, left click and set to open with Adobe acrobat.
For IE the method will be pretty similiar but not using those same names.
It sounds like the browser is trying to open the PDF itself but isn't booting up the pluging to do the work. check that when you downloaded Adobe it idn't just land on the HDD and sit there, when you installed adobe did the final window of the installer invite you to read the readme file and open adobe reader?

sounds to me that the install crapped out at the end. last time i downloaded and installed adobe reader after a HDD FDISK and re-install from scratch i got the "readme and open adobe" invite. find the installations file on the HDD and have another go at installing it.
