Hi everyone. I need to know if Luculia gratissima is poisonous to livestock? I've got a plant in the garden which I will get rid of if it is. I've googled it and cant find anything but it'd be nice to have a definitive answer either way. Thanks.

Highly unlikely to be toxic. In fact it is believed by some to have anthelmintic properties to control worms and other parasites in cattle.

Do NOT cross this paddock! ... Unless you can do it in 9 seconds, 'cos the bull can do it in 10!

If it has anthelmintic properties it IS toxic [to worms!]. That makes the question "How toxic?" or "Is it toxic to species that I don't want to poison?"

Well if you go down that road, Mudlerk, probably everything is toxic to something!.. Chocolate is a favourite of humans, but toxic to dogs! I think the OP's concern was whether or not Luculia gratissima is toxic to livestock, and I believe it is not because, as mentioned, it has been used to help control worms in cattle.

Well, probably not everything...I was just trying to point out that it's never a binary good/bad issue with toxicity [or, for that matter, anything else in life!]. Most of the poisons we use...anthelmintics, insecticides...even vinegar...have some negative 'side effects' that also need to be taken into account.

Thanks for the comments. I feel I can relax about it being in the garden now...if someone manages to escape their paddock and ends up in that part of the garden then at least they wont instantly cark it!!!!!
