Hello All,
We have approx. 3ha of virgin land in West Melton available for potato growing. Would anyone be interested, or know of anyone who might be interested in using it to grow potatoes? Please message me here, or on 021877158 for further details. (Also listed on West Melton Trade and Exchange facebook page)

Thanks, Stephen

Scrub land or bush that has not previously been farmed.

Did you know, that what you thought I said, was not what I meant :S

Why to you want potatoes to be grown? The fertility and water needed for crops in general and a specialist crop like potatoes in particular are quite different than for pasture. At some stage, you or the person that you lease the land to will need to do various soil tests. It might be worthwhile getting a soil test done for potato growing. Also test for DDT. Phone Ravensdown on 0800 100 123 to get costs and directions on how to get these tests done. Also work out how crops will be irrigated.

We planted a lot of potatoes on a block of land years ago, we ended up with hardly a small bag full as the neighbours must have been having a good time, most of the tops did not have anything under them, yet they had been doing really well a few weeks previous to when we decided to dig them, so never again would I go out and plant on an unoccupied block of land.

There are several spud growers up Courtenay way. One grows other veg as well and has a stall half a Km towards Sheffield from Courtenay Rd.
Sorry but I don't know their surname name off hand but a couple of people I know have them leasing their land.
I do know that they operate out off the end of Robertsons Rd.
Apparently, from a discussion I had had with a Courtenay man, spuds are giving disease problems at present in the Courtenay to Springfield area so "virgin' land might be of real interest to someone in the business of commercially growing them. Especially if you are away from the "infected" areas.
If I happen to hear of the peoples names later today or tomorrow,, I'll come back on here & pass it on as it might be good for all concerned.
Best wishes
