We had a guy next door who sold his property nearly 6 years ago, he asked me if he could put two containers and heaps of other crap down the down of our place till he got settled into a new place, well the stuff is still sitting there and he haven't seen him for four years till today, he drive straight past got some stuff out of one of the containers and drove back past and gone with out even calling in. How long is it before its deemed abandoned and it become ours.

the "stuff" still belongs to the owner and if you do anything that damges the stuff, you are in trouble! There is a procedure you will have to go through to finalise this situation legally. Check it out at the community law centre....

5 acres, Ferguson 35X and implements, Hanmay pto shredder, BMW Z3, Countax ride on mower, chooks, Dorper and Wiltshire sheep. Bosky wood burning central heating stove and radiators. Retro caravan. Growing our own food and preserving it. Small vineyard, crap wine. :)

Cheeky! To not even call in and talk to you is pretty rude. Have you tried contacting him?

after four years I would be assuming it was abandoned (yes I know you have just seen him, but he doesn't know that) and I would do what I wanted with it. It would be difficult for him to prove anything and four years of rent free storage...
If you have a name for this chap and he has bought another property, as long as his name is not Smith I could track him down for you within a few minutes, if you want to tell him to come and get his stuff.

Ive not touched his 'crap' since its been there. the last two years or so ive been thinking that 'hey those two containers are worth about 10,000 each, so if he doesn't come back and get them, they'll become mine', at some stage, just need to find out how long that is, thats why i haven't chased him up.
I'll PM you his name kai.

Have a look at this flowchart regarding abandoned goods for tenants/landlords here:
tenancy.govt.nz/assets/Uploads/Tenancy/a...-goods-flowchart.pdf
I know you were not leasing the space to him, but the same rules may apply., but check with community law.

If you put another padlock on the containers, (to ensure they are secure), he couldn't just ignore you the next time he visits his stuff.
