Does anyone have some grains I can beg, buy or steal?

I have some milk grains available, but I'm near Taupo so probably not much use? My grains have been exploding in population, they seem to love the fresh goat milk. :)

Hawai you can post them - just pop into a zip lock plastic bag with a spoonful of kefir and away they go.

I bought mine from TM through the post and they were fine. Unfortunately not enough to share yet and my friend has dibs on the first split I do. Mine don't seem to be growing that fast. I feed them organic milk but I don't have access to raw milk yet. Perhaps that speeds up the growth....

Is there a difference between the benefits of milk over water kefir?

They both have probiotics but the down side to water kefir is that it's made with sugar and from my point of view I am not sure how much sugar is left in the finished product.
My gut feeling (haha see what I did there!) is that milk kefir is more nutritious and it is certainly more versatile. You can drink it straight or in smoothies, use it in cooking instead of yoghurt or buttermilk, and make cheese from it, similar to cream cheese, or labneh, ( and even hard cheese but I haven't done it myself) and I separate out the whey and use it to start my vegetable ferments like sauerkraut and kim chi. Its good for the chooks and pigs as well.

For a slightly odd but really informative read go to Dom's kefir site users.chariot.net.au/~dna/Makekefir.html
