Downloading duplicate emails, how to stop?

I am not aware of any changes to my settings but, for about a month, we have been getting most, not all, of our emails downloaded twice, both together.

How do I stop this?

To save going through a long-winded chain of questions and answers, have you tried Googling a solution?
You could start here; blog.emailaddressmanager.com/outlook/dup...reasons_outlook.html
Or here -

Personally, it's a rarity if I ever seek an answer in this forum. It's inevitably quicker and more authoritative to simply type the key words into a search engine.

Not my own domain or anything Ruth, just good (?) old xtra.

Yes Will, I have tried but have not yet asked the right question to get the right answer. :-(

Ok, still getting duplicates downloading. Asked Google and it seems too many emails in my cybermail could be an issue. Off to my mailbox which I have found is chocka so ..... 55,780 emails [:0] delete later............ it is empty.
Let's see what happens now.
Only took me 10 hours to delete them. I know, I know, there must be a better way.

If you're using a computer-based email client, why is it not set up to remove/delete emails from the server once they're downloaded, or after a few days if you're of nervous disposition?

Talking of removing/deleting emails, I'm drawn to wonder if, even when you think you've deleted them forever, they aren't still out 'there' somewhere.
And, before you deduce that I'm paranoid, just let me tell you this;
A little while back I had a new hard-drive installed in my pc. The guy who helped me do this suggested that instead of keeping the email format I had been using I would be a lot better-off using 'Office Outlook'.
Well, I don't know whether or not we didn't click the right boxes but it started downloading all the emails I'd ever received in the previous eight years or so.
I think it treated me like a 'new customer' who had just not got around to opening up anything in the waiting Inbox. It did not matter a jot that I had previously 'deleted' them.
It took two days, solid, to download the more than 14 000 that were stored there.
It made the very strong point that, once it's there online, it might just be on there 'forever'. So, be careful in what say and show.

When you set up Office Outlook (or outlook express) to receive emails from your ISP, you have to specify several things. 1. To leave a copy on your provider email service (eg, webmail or other) and also 2. a start date for downloads, otherwise you will get those 14,000 emails you have not bothered to delete permanently. (You have to delete, and then delete again from the deleted folder so as to delete completely)
:)

Did you know, that what you thought I said, was not what I meant :S

I'm not sure what you mean by saying 'delete then delete again' to permanently remove them.
If you mean - take them from the Inbox into Deleted file, and then subsequently delete them from the Deleted file, then that's exactly what I did.
I just would've thought that once I had downloaded them from my isp and into my Inbox they wouldn't still all be there with the isp ready to be downloaded a second time.
(If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about you are wildly mistaken.)

I do follow your gist Will. When you open up a new email programme and download, ALL emails from wayyyyyyyyy back will come tumbling in. Thank goodness I have not dome that recently. 58k of them !

This issue has not been around for that long, a month maybe. Nothing has been changed here as far as I know.

This is my fool proof method for all IT issues.
Take the computer outside
Throw it against a wall
Stamp on all the little bits.
You will never have another duplicate email......
