Telecom are lucky I am not sure where the key to the gun safe is right now...

We moved two houses (about 80 metres) down the road. The new house previously had broadband. The old place had broadband. The neighbours in between have broadband. So obviously I requested that my broadband be moved to the new house with the phone line. So now the broadband doesn't work. Five phone calls to Xtra and they decided that it didn't work because we are too far from the exchange and it will never work. In fact I was a liar for saying it had ever worked. That I called a supervisor 'obnoxious' after he had told me I was making it up that there was ever broadband on the property as it is clearly impossible I was also labeled rude apparently... They refused to send the technician out, even though I offered to pay. (If you go into the check to see if broadband is available to our phone line it tells you it is)

A formal complaint or two later and the techie is coming this afternoon. However they tell me categorically if he doesn't like the signal he gets he won't connect it and they are not interested in marginal cases as there are too many complaints about speed.

So obviously once I get the thing reconnected Telecom will cease to be my service provider in short order.

But I am not sure of the options if they refuse to reconnect the jetstream. I have scanned the horizon and can't see a transmitter tower of any description (could be behind the pine trees I guess or might be visible from on top of the roof...)

I need fast internet or I can't work from home (and that is going to add an hours travel to my day) so need some thoughts. The charming Xtra crowd are singularly unhelpful in what my other options are.

Anyone? Please?

Wino, Telstra have been brilliant here. I have really slow broadband though... There is a crowd that i hear advertised on the radio around here, EOL or the like?? they say they have been NZ's fastest ISP for 10 years or something, and its wireless and available 'widely in the BOP'. Will listen to see if hear ad on way to kindy...

If you ave some friendly neighbours and can access wireless share a connection with the neighbours.
I did this in a factory/studio unit in Auckland and shared a very very fast connection much better than jetstream. you will need to set up a local wireless network but this can be made secure so that no one else accesses it & each member can't access others units.

Wahoo - pleased to report that the techie had no doubt that it would go with some coaxing. He's fiddled with half the house jackpoints and added a splitter and here I am going fast again. Will investigate telstra thanks oskatd (am definitely going to investigate someone... you shouldn't have to lay a complaint to get the technician out)

Great idea phil too - I could have taken my wireless router over to the neighbours and split the costs... will keep that in mind.
