Hrmph. Rural supply store :-(

having been dealing with the same rural supply store for 9 years I decided to up grade my account to one of their cards which can be used in other shops etc.
Duly filled out the form and off it went. Phone rang this morning.

It was the Head Office telling me they needed a direct debit form to my bank account. I said no. Well I cant have an upgraded account with out setting up a direct debit. I refused. we pay on various dates, depending on our budget, by internet banking and always by the due date. Have never missed or made a late payment. I then get informed if we pay the bill early there wont be a direct debit as the balance will be nil. Really ?
I pointed out if I paid on the 20th by internet banking I would end up paying twice as direct debits are processed before internet banking. Standard banking procedure.

So they spoke to their supervisor and decided they would waive the requirement for a direct debit after looking at my credit history. Then we went on to discuss the credit limit, I asked for $1500 on the application which is what we have now but that's made up of two fuel cards ($500 each) and the account $500. I wanted one fuel account, so $500 for that and $1000 for the main account. Nope, I had to agree to $500 0n the account, $500 on the fuel card and a spare $500 just in case.
So I commented to the effect I can then go and buy $800 of car tyres (with a 12 per cent discount) on the account - No I cant as the account limit is only $500.
But (this is where I really got annoyed), if I kept to the credit limit and paid the account as agreed on or before time I could ask for a increase in credit in three or four months!

Well I don't know what the hell I have been doing for the last 9 years!

I told them to rip up the application, I wont bother with the card up grade and to leave my account and fuel cards as they are. Not impressed.

And one of the main reasons I wont do a direct debit is we have had minor issues with their so called accounting system due to their faults not ours. I simply don't trust them to get it right.
Also, their terms and conditions and application form show nothing about the requirement for direct debits and bank accounts. There wasn't exactly full disclosure on their part

With Farmlands and Ravensdown we get invoiced monthly. If the invoice is correct then we have set up to direct debit on the 20th of the month. If it is wrong then we contact them to sort it out. Nothing has gone wrong since we set up the DD, about 3 years ago, but it will be interesting to see what happens when it does.
The main problem with both these companies is that you have to buy a few shares, and it takes about 3 years to get your money back from the shares when you stop farming.

Nobody gets a direct debit out of me. Automatic payments of a fixed amount yes but not a randomly variable amount being taken whenever they like. My money is mine and I decide who gets paid when.

In tight times farm supply companies can be burnt very badly by people delaying payment of bills. I have no problem with them want a ''guarantee'' that everything I clock up on my account is going to be paid on time...so that they in turn can pay their bills on time.
Even in our farming business it only takes one large client not to pay us on time and we in turn cant pay our bills without a call to the bank manager.

and likewise if you want to use them as a credit facility they can set the terms to ensure they are paid for what you have bought.

I was insulted at the refusal to give me an change in credit. I always had $1500.
All I wanred was the credit redistributed to more on the actual store account and less on fuel. Given they admit fuel charges are causing the most payment problems they should have been happy I wanted less fuel as we have less vehicles.
And to have to prove my reliability to pay when I have never missed a bill or paid late since my account opened 9 years ago, I would think I already proved my ability to pay. It was insulting.
And I am with igor. No random $ amount direct debts.

I also will not let any company take money out of my bank accounts, and still pay by cheque for most things. We do have credit card, but have a limit on it of $1000, so that if needing to pay more, I ring the bank, they sort it, and then revert the account back to the $1000 in any payment.
