Napier restaurants was created by kai
I am going up for the art deco event, arriving Thursday, leaving Sunday.
I am looking for good places to eat.
What I do not want is
cafe style cabinet food which always looks good but is tasteless and reheated.
I am looking for a places that are a bit different. I love strong flavours, but do not like Thai as it is too sweet. I like Mediterranean, Chinese, Indian (though I make enough Indian food at home, so ordinary curry does not do it for me).
I have seen this place and I wonder what it is like.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Looks really nice and different.
I am going to The Mission for a celebration meal in March and I am hoping it ticks all the boxes too!

Pacifica is good, but expensive. Smaller degustation type plates, you need a few to have a decent meal 
there's a good Indian in town, will get the name / address and post. mexi mama is nice Mexican food, plenty of bars nearby too. Check out some of the wineries, most hve pretty good menus, Clearview was great last time we were there and I understand elephant hills is excellent too.

rates fairly well and with interesting comments on TripAdvisor.

Oh yes forgot as mentioned above Clearview. Went for lunch in January with a couple of friends for lunch and it was really fantastic although quite pricey. We did however have a nice hot day, were under shade and its surroundings were really nice, sort of rustic and vineyardy. But you would have to drive as it's off the beaten track a bit if you wanted a drink or two.

The Indonesian restaurant on Marine parade has great food. New owners are continuing the tradition. Its very popular though so you need to book. Had a friend go last weekend and she was very impressed.

I have a vision of the chef with tweezers counting out 2 chilli flakes onto each one.

We went to a turkish restaurant in Napier called Anatolia,the meals were a reasonable price and were filling as well .
It was one street back from marine parade i think

We have been to Pacifica and did not enjoy it at all also over priced much preferred the old church

There just a few days ago: We looked at Pasifika Kaimoana and it did look very interesting but the reviews we saw were either great or terrible so for the price we chose Mister D's instead which was AMAZING. I haven't eaten food that good in a very long time. If you go, try the gnocchi with cheese sauce & coffee grounds. Don't be put off by the coffee grounds - they were perfect. Also had the cheese souffle - also amazing. The risotto with roast duck, yum and much bigger than I expected. Not sure what the fish was like but it got good comments.

I had a look at their menu and nothing on their website stood out, but the two you mentioned I did not notice on it. I can't say OH would be going for anything with coffee in it (heart issue a few months back) but the duck does sound pretty good.
