When Stephan's mother turned 80 several years ago, one of the nieces made a polystyrene "cake" to hold all the candles, so the very nicely iced real birthday cake didn't get ruined by dripping wax and candle holes. But by the time all the 80 candles were lit, the first had burnt down to the base and suddenly there was an alarming conflagration as the whole thing began to burn. It was quickly taken out into the garden, where it was beaten out with a spade! That's the part of that special birthday which is always remembered with a great deal of mirth.

Well this has been a very pleasant and happy thing. I don't think I've ever publicised my birthday before. Thank you all for the birthday greetings and wishes.
I've been on my own in the rain for most of the day, happily pottering around. Stephan came home earlier than I expected from a necessary day out and then I spent a couple of hours planting seeds and re-potting plants in my green house. It was like being a teenager again (that was something I used to love doing then) without the angst and awfulness.
All in all, a happy end to my twelve days of birthday.
