Since getting back from Fenghua after my job in Chongqing went south with the boss embezzling and sending the company bankrupt, I spent a long time job hunting, gave up on work and went back to school coming out with my Class 2 truck licence and a host of endorsements (D, F, R, T, W). After a while looking for work again I found a job in Rakaia and have been staying at my cousins in Rolleston while looking for somewhere to live.

Now I'm off on friday to a room on a lifestyle block between Rakaia and Methven, BUT, it has no internet... too far for copper broadband, dialup sucks, satellite too expensive.

Hi, I'm Kiwi303 and I'm an internet addict!

Rather than join Internet Anonymous, are there any local porviders who do wifi/radio broadband and don't charge three arms and four legs?

:D

Cheers

We are in Dunsandel, with 'Farmside' and it costs well over $200 for 7gb.
Neighbour only pays for 2gb, a lot cheaper. Its tuff!

My son is in Ch Ch and has unlimited Internet for very little $$$

One place I have found via google, shows green covering Dunsandel... I can't find any info on their site about connection fees or equipment rental/purchase/installation costs...

www.wirelessweb.co.nz/coverage

$135 would buy you 20Gb there!

What is your Vodaphone connection like where you are Deanna? for 7Gb I pay $80 to Vodaphone, it's a 5Gb smartphone mobile internet data plan but you can top up $20 at a time and get 512Mb each top up for a bonus 2Gb equalling 7GB. Thats how I get internet out at mums farm, but I left the PCIMIA (sp) card and sim at the farm for mum.

I might get another vodaphone data stick/vodem and do that again, but I would hope for cheaper WIFI based internet first!

Price includes the home phone. I few places show our area to be within their range, then they come out and mumble about trees etc.

Apparently there a good deal available soon, using the phone lines, but I won't hold my breath.

I'm on 021 and can get txts inside and out, but can only talk on the phone outside, though can answer it inside, but have to head outside quick.

Sorry I'm not very knowledgeable on this stuff as you can tell. The Mr uses a T stick for his business.

I'd love a better deal though, so if you hear of anything.

We've been using these guys for a while now, quite happy with them.

I can't find a coverage map on the website, though it is mentioned. Perhaps get in touch with them?

If you get a non-roaming mobile signal from 2degrees, you can get 12GB for $99 and it only expires after 6 months. Farmside are what you use, because you're forced to with no other option, but the sound of it.

Yeah, I've thought of one of these: www.trademe.co.nz/mobile-phones/accessor...uction-767420800.htm and dropping the Vodem/T-stick/2Deg in the cradle since new cellular 3G modems don't come with external antenna sockets much these days.

I'll have to wave my phone around the balcony and eves a bit when I move in friday to see just how good/bad the signal was. I got 4 bars out by the chook shed down the back, so there should be at least one hot spot around the house to put a permanent booster antenna.

You could try the Wifiguys or something like that they do Wifi connections to rural properties so long as you have line of sight to the hills you may be okay. 0800438932

Scorch may be out that way. We used them in Oxford before we got high speed through the land line and they were good. I have friends at Staveley and Methven who have good internet so I will ask who they use.

We got a pamphlet in the mail today regarding wireless in our street in particular, today having improved from vodaphone, going to ring them on Monday.. Although I think Farmside is through vodaphone, who we are already with, will be interesting.
