Ebay users was created by Stikkibeek
Yesterday we got an email from Ebay with the quoted message. There is a lot more to it. At first I thought "just another scam" but nowhere is there a "click here" to divert to some shady email address in some shady country, so I think it might be genuine. At the bottom of this email is our name and user name, which also makes me think it might be genuine.
Anybody else received this same message?

Dear eBay Member,

To help ensure customers' trust and security on eBay, I am asking all eBay users to change their passwords.

Here's why: Recently, our company discovered a cyberattack on our corporate information network. This attack compromised a database containing eBay user passwords.

What's important for you to know: We have no evidence that your financial information was accessed or compromised. And your password was encrypted.

What I ask of you:
Go to eBay and change your password. If you changed your password on May 21 or later, we do not need you to take any additional action at this time..........

They also say

Here's what we know: This attack occurred between late February and early March and resulted in unauthorized access to a database of eBay users that includes customers' name, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth.

If this attack occured in the time frame stated, why has it taken so long for them to notify people?

That is a long timeframe. I was not surprised when I heard about it last week, but the fact you only got an email yesterday is pretty shoddy!

Yes this message is for real. I heard it reported on the news a couple of times.
Also my credit card has been used 5 times in the last 6 weeks by someone in the states. They have failed but it`s a pain in the a#@* getting new cards & disputing charges.
No more overseas buys for a while.

Linda, do you use paypal at all and is your credit card data compromised by this event?

I have tried to reset our ebay data this am, but they are "experiencing technical problems" That doesn't surprise me. Every man and his dog are probably trying to reset passwords!

Is Paypal experiencing issues too Stikki? I have an old ebay account which I haven't accessed for over 5 years.... and at my former aussie address.

But I heard about it on the news too a few nights ago.

M2 They say this

If you used the same eBay password on any other site, I encourage you to change your password on those sites too. And if you are a PayPal user, we have no evidence that this attack affected your PayPal account or any PayPal financial information, which is encrypted and stored on a separate secure network.

I take it that means the cyber attack didn't compromise paypal. just checking if Linda had problems via this route, or from Ebay.

If you're concerned, go to the EBay website and click on 'Password Update,' on the homepage.
You will soon see whether you've been responding to a scammer or not.

I liked Occam's Razor so much, I bought the company.

Good advice Willeyre, but try post #4 on this thread! :D

Their "technical difficulties" now seem to be over!
