A month later they confessed to me that they'd thrown them out because "they didn't like the idea of eating a chicken that had been killed".

I have eaten creatures that have died of natural causes but I have found that those deliberately killed in a humane manner when they are not expecting it generally taste better. Does road kill count as a natural cause?

Picking up road-kill can be really entertaining - the looks people give you! I just tell anyone who slows down to ask that times are tough and a dead hare makes a great casserole. :D

Actually, they make fantastic stoat-trap baits and we always stop to grab anything reasonably fresh and unmangled. A neighbour used to leave any he'd found on the road over our front gate.

I too move road kill ( and get some very funny looks ).. but I get it off the road so the hawks can eat it without being made flat themselves.. :D

Bugger the hawks. If it looks good I'll take it for myself.

Was that before or after they found out you were running stoat traps?

one of my first, cherished memories of LSB living: we had a pot luck dinner with all the neighbours on the road, and one couple brought a rabbit pie.
another neighbour, who is quite a fastidious eater, complimented the cook and dug right in.
His face was absolutely priceless when the cook elaborated that it was actually a hare pie, and he'd used a hare he'd found this morning on the road. :D :D
