For the owners of the two horses struck by a car just after 6AM this morning. OH just went through minutes after it happened, and at that stage one horse at least was still alive. Don't know if it died from injuries or was humanely dispatched. Driver could only have been speeding, unless both horses dashed across the road at the last moment. Still, the property owner will be liable, if his fences were at fault. There is a stud righ by where it happened, so do not know if it was valuable broodmares, or some nearby pleasure horses belonging to show people. Very sad.
Road was closed for at least three hours which caused chaos to a nearby school

Why do the police always keep roads closed for so long? How long does it take to drag a couple of dead horses and a wreck off the road and get traffic moving?

No one wins at all..... very sad.
However, in the last few weeks I have driven along rural roads (far below legal speed limit) and come across on two occasions on the other side of a bend, horses and riders in no win situations in the middle of the road.
No escape route, rider and horse in shade, no hi vis wear.... surely common sense must prevail somewhere!

One, to aid in the investigation of what happened
Two, to indicate how much power they have.

Apparently all scenes are treated as "crime/forensic" sites nowadays and they will measure, photograph, talk with witnesses, all to establish a case of who is at fault. Was there, speed, alcohol, drugs involved.
In this case, no doubt they will establish ownership of the horses and find out if the owner is negligent in any way.
