Nearly every, if not every, nighttime viewing opportunity for comets, planetary alignments, auroras, eclipses, etc. have ALL been blocked to us by cloudy skies for going on about 9 years now. I can't think of one nighttime celestial event that we've ever been able to view!! And tonight appears to be the same, as we've got some wicked wind and rain forecast, with flood warnings issues just south of us. [B)] If anyone gets some good photos, please share! [:X]

Radio NZ said about an hour after sunset but it will need to be really dark and could be visible all over the country. Like Andrea I don't think we'll be seeing it here as the cloud is very dense.

Am down south here - meant to be the best location for viewing auroras. But alas it has started raining here - probably will be cloudy all night.

5 acres, husband, daughter, son, me, about 12 sheep and their lambs, currently no ram (yay!), 2 Galloways, about 35 chooks, 3 cats and 2 budgies.

I want to see it, too, but it doesn't look good:

There is none at the moment, though:

Probably an honour for the south islanders only. Not a chance we could see it up here even if it were a clear sky. :(

I do hope some of your South Islanders got to see it but the weather doesn't seem to make that likely. I last saw it over 50 years ago (as a special treat I was allowed to stay up late :D ) and it was the most beautiful and spectacular act of nature I think I have ever seen. All these years later I can still see these fantastic colours coming up into the sky. Brilliant.

Cheers,
Ronnie

There was none yet. It will most likely be daytime here when it hits - possibly between 1 and 2 pm today:

We used to watch these in Northern Norway, all the more spectacular reflected off the white snow.
My son still remembers being just over a year old and being pulled out of bed to view the spectacular.

Wow - we're just back from seeing an impressive display from Leeston south of Christchurch. 10.40pm to 11pm was the peak from what we could see. It's difficult to describe - not like what's on TV because it wasn't above us - it was more in front of us. It was as if the main display was switched on with the flick of a switch with spikes reaching high up into the sky.
