I want a things for sale at our gate, I want a blackboard, but I have no idea where to buy blackboard paint from. Mitre 10 did not have any, tbh they seemed puzzled as to what it is.

Resene has it but be prepared - it's expensive. I've heard it works quite well.

We bought a small can a while ago from Mitre 10 - yes very expensive. A friend who runs a roadside shop says that they just use black paint - much much cheaper

1 Border collie, 1 Huntaway, 2 Lhasa Apsos, Suffolk and arapawa ewe crosses, an Arapawa ram,an East Friesian ewe , 5 cats, 42 ducks , 1 rooster and 30 hens, 5 geese, 12 goats, 2 donkeys, 2 house cows, one heifer calf, one bull calf, 3 rabbits and lots and lots and lots of fruit trees...

the last one I made I used stove blackening as I had some spare, it was OK, but did not quite work the same as the blackboards I remember as a school kid.

Here in Christchurch Mitre10 sells Resene paints but this may be because Resene has lost shops in the earthquake.

I've found it at Mitre10, Bunnings, Resene, Dulux, pretty much all paint shops should have some. Alternately matt black does a decent job as blackboard paint too

I got mine in mitre 10 BUT you can also make it - and if you DIY it you can make it any colour! I've done it with great success.

How to -
Pour one cup of your paint into a bowl. Any colour will do
Add 2 teaspoons of non-sanded grout and mix really well making sure all the wee lumps are out.
And that's it! How simple is that?

Non-sanded grout, in NZ would appear to be the powdered stuff - they didn't know what I meant till we found it.

Couple of things to note
- I would add the powdered grout slowly, stirring a lot in-between. It has a tendency to all of a sudden turn into actual grout - great if you've got a bathroom to do, not so great if you want to paint with it.
- Even stirring and stirring I was still left with tiny grainy bits when I painted our larder door. Not to worry though as a very, very light sand will get rid of them.

we got a roll of black board decal off the Grabone store site for $29 - bit cheaper than the paint but maybe not so good at the gate - just another option if you are thinking of a sign you bring in. They don't have it on there right now but it comes up regularly.

would it be worth buying an actual blackboard... ? sometimes you can pick things up quite cheaply which saves the job of making one.

one thing I would advise.. if you buy the real stuff.. give it a REALLY good mix/shake before you use it.. obviously the stuff in there (grout?) it pretty heavy

Or you could use the back of an old real estate sign and use white board markers.
