Charity Register....? was created by witheze
I have had two charities ring me tonight.....both I have supported in the past.....One the WWL fund supporting Maui Dolphin.....and the other Forest and Bird......not local.....Is there a register that I can look up exactly what percentage the Charity will get? Both told me 100% as I have donated before.....

witheze - the chances of 100% is just a lie. Sorry but this is not the fault of the callers but being misled by the Group (good heart says indirectly) that is running a Business that does this. Don't get me wrong - they need to get a return as well, as they are employing the telemarketers, doing the administration to capture the money etc but I would guess, having been on a Board that agreed to doing this that it will be at best be about 20% going to the charity.
What you need to know is that you can contact organisations and make your donation directly to them and then they are getting 100%.
Bear in mind ( I would do the direct payment!) that it is far too hard for many charitable organisations to do fundraising for themselves and this is why they use the fundraising Companies. One I cannot name was working for us and their input was far in excess of just collecting and distributing money. They paid for so much in terms of advertising etc - just enormous support for the organisation that maybe the question is the one you need to ask of the Groups that you want to support. Just what are you getting? Go to them directly.

Sadly, charities have become businesses.
The real question is how much of your donation ends up at the end result ?
I heard that only 5 cents of every dollar raised for water supply in Africa ends up as a water supply.
Without Charity the world would be worse off.
Give food to Food bank and 100% of your donation is used.
Give $100 to a project in Africa and maybe $5 of benefit reaches the needy.
Not a winge or decrying the many who help. Just a sad fact of how things happen today.
Rotary Projects, I think, seem to get good value.
Often funds are used to buy materials, at heavily discounted prices.
Freight is donated.
Labour is donated and the project is completed and working.
Not displayed on TV but just does the job the team promised it would.

World Vison is one of the top 10 companies in the world - right up there with Exon Mobile and Microsoft. If every donated cent would end up in Africa it would make an impact, wouldn't it.
Aid workers in Africa get paid six figure sums. I once saw a table where the biggies were listed in descending order. On top was the Leprosy Foundation with 80% of donations going to the intended purpose. Oxfam was quite good I think but at the bottom there was less than 10% going to its intended purpose. World Vision was not among those listed so I started to investigate. I hit a brick wall but was years later told by an insider that they would be at the bottom of that list with only 7% going to the needy.
If someone calls - ask whether they are a call centre or not. I once had a call and the lady said she was a volunteer for the kidney foundation I think. 100% to the kidney foundation so that was good.

That's what I like about the charity I'm involved with; ALL the money goes direct to them, they do ALL their own fundraising with volunteer labour for everything.
The only money that isn't spent directly on the horses is only being spent on paper, printing costs, advertising, etc. There's no office being paid for, no phones, power, etc & charitable discounts are still pushed for with every $$ spent.
It's good to know that with all of the scrimping & saving on the admin end, we have plenty of funds available to make a real difference where we're supposed to & spend donors money where they want it to go. [^]

GloPony what a wonderful job you and the other volunteers are doing with this organization, charity begins at home as the saying goes, so for all the animal lovers out there this is a great charity to support.
