Correct name for dial up adapter was created by witheze
After I bought my new laptop I realised it had nowhere to fit a telephone cable and I have kept my 10 buck connection to telecom dialup . My new computer is chewing thru my meagre allowance from Farmside satelite so thought I may as well use some telecom dialup since I'm paying for it. So I have established I need an adapter to plug into computer. A new one is $70 from electronic shop so have gone on Trade Me but not sure what the correct name is for the dialup adapter.......help please........

when you say an adapter, are you looking for the size a phone lead will plug into, in which case you are likely to have one. A phone lead has two different sized ends, one will fit one will not.
Or possibly are you on about a external dialup modem which is a small box, either way you will still need exactly the same sized port (socket) on your computer as the first option.

witheze,
what you are looking for is a USB dialup modem. There are a few available on TM.

Just ask for an External 56K Dialup Modem, then specify it needs to connect to your USB port.
Otherwise they will probabally dish you up a 3G cellular modem. Like kai thought.

No, I am talking about USB 56K dialup modems i.e one that plugs into the phone line.
Most laptops these days, as well as not having a dialup modem built in, do not a serial RS232 port built in so a standard external dialup modem is of no use. That leaves using a USB dialup modem which have been around for years.
