Aquarium Help please? was created by Doug
I have an Aqua One Model 200 filter in my tropical fish water tank. This has four rubber suckers which attach it to the inside of the glass. I have been using it just fine for nearly 1 year but now the rubber suckers just will not stick. I have tried cleaning them with meths, rubbing them with an abrasive pad, cleaning the glass but to no avail. Any ideas would be very much appreciated thank you.

I had the same trouble with mine also, and then it ceased up and started screaming. I use a home made one now with a small fountain pump, and spill the water through a microfilter cloth sieve. It doesn't look very elegant, but it does work and I just have to rinse the cloth occasionally.

If you want to stick with what you have, ask your local pet shop if you can get replacement suckers.

Did you know, that what you thought I said, was not what I meant :S

Thank you and yes I had tried not only the local agent but also the manufacturer and told that I would need to buy a whole unit! Now I am off to a local hardware/bun shop just in case they can supply said suckers or ones that I can adapt.

Doug how big is your aquarium in terms of litres. I did look up your one - a hang on? which could filter 200 litres an hour. Is this the one you are talking about? I read also they are for when a "normal" filter would take up too much room. Are we on the same page?

My aquarium is only (guessing) about 35 litres and my pump (suckered onto the back wall) decides every once in a while to go for a walk which results in vibration etc. I think of my fish and go "poor wee blighters - they must all have headaches!) so I put it back where it is meant to stay and it is literally weeks before it walks again.

I am an ignoramus about aquariums obviously but could it be that it is technology gone haywire and you would be better with a regular suck on filter on the wall, not a hang on?

Hi DiDi
My aquarium is 102.6 litres in volume. This filter has been most efficient up until the suckers started not sticking. This filter was recommended to me by my normal pet shop but also by a mate who specialises and sells tropical fish.
It actually keeps my water very clear. The earlier filters which I had used were a waste of money.

Serious aquarium then! I inherited mine from a daughter who went overseas and assumed I would kill the fish (not by choice but ignorance) in a matter of days but they are flying with new babies adding to the mayham. Hope you can get this sorted.

Sometimes craft shops sell packets of those suckers (for people who make suncatchers etc. to hang on windows) so if the hardware store can't help maybe try the craft section in a Warehouse or art supply shop?

If you have no success, PM me - there is a big craft place in Hamilton (David's Emporium or those who are wondering) which sells all sorts of weird and wonderful things, and I'd be happy to find out if they have some, and post them to you if so.

Tomorrow is the day I will stop procrastinating.

Thanks Kaybe. I have to go in to the city tomorrow so will try and track down such a place if there is any such place left after the quakes. I will let you know how I get on and many thanks indeed for your kind offer.

Boy, I remember Davids Emporium... I got a Jacket and Pants from there while a student, durable green army worsted, a handfull of shiny brass buttons, some thread and it was all done.

I got stopped one day walking across campus between classes and asked if I was russian!

Think of the typical russian army officer from 90's movies, with a beard, and you pretty much had me! I must scan my photo of my Student Union group portrait and post it :P

You could find almost ANYthing in Davids Emporium :D

It's a treasure trove, it's true. What freaks me out is the big sharp hunting knife display right near the checkout - they sure are trusting folks! [:0]

I managed to obtain a set of those rubber suckers from a very small pet shop in town today. I think that I might have been a bit of a sucker myself because they cost $5 each! Never mind, they seem to be sticking which is what really counts.
I didn't know that these things perish reasonably quickly until told today.
Kaybe many thanks for your kind offer.
