I noted your location and found you on Googlemaps... you are a long way inland and very near the famous Yangtze!
How are things going? Is the area you are in a relatively new construction?
The terrain looks interesting: sort of long wrinkle ridges a bit like the Appalachians.

New? Nah...

I teach in a building erected in 1951 :D One of the orginal CQ Universities, not a Johnny-come-lately place.

As a matter of fact I finished the last paperwork and signed off on the exam scores for my Maritime Logistics course students General English class results. now I am free and with nothing to do except explore China until we return to Uni on the 24th Febuary ready to resume classes on the 27th.

I pass over a bridge crossing the Yangtze river every time I take the bus or monorail to the CBD about 7 Km north of here.
I am upriver of the notorious three Gorges Dams, they lie between here and Wuhan in Hubei.

My laptop I bought in 2005 and brought along died around Christmas, and the replacement (cheap ass second hand) fell off the end of the couch and cracked the screen, so until I get over to the tech area of Shapingba district (I live in Nan'an district) and have it repaired next week, I'm without a computer... and have been for a while. I am using a Cyber cafe, no pictures to upload since the cafe computers all lack USB ports... so things like pictures to my Travelpod trip blog will have to wait till mine is working on the uni network once more. I have lots of photos... but travelpod sucks on uploading pics in full size from a 10Mp DSLR.

I'm in the process of planning a trip around the nearby provinces, south to Guangxi (Guilin, Hezhou), then up through Henan (Changsha, Shaoshan) and Hubei (Wuhan, Wudang Shan), for next month. One of my class Monitors (like prefects, or head students, they keep the rest of class in line and act as an information conduit from the teachers to the rest of the class) from a Tourism class has invited me to her home town where she will act as tour guide and show me around.

I'm happy to go since she's pretty :D

Acclimitizing to living in a city where I cannot speak the language, and 99.8% of the residents cannot speak mine, was a challenge, but after a month and a bit it has settled down.

Quite well, I like hot food, so the local HotPot dishes cooked in red hot chilli oil suit me just fine.

Then there are the rat meat skewers found at street stalls (sold as "Chicken", which is most definitly not from something with feathers...), Tsaty. The supermarkets have a poultry section with live ducks and hens, even cooing doves in cages, plus tanks of live fish.

Would you believe pigs ears sell for 33 Yuan per 500gm, but boneless skinned chicken breast for 21 Yuan per 500gm, chicken feet for 28 Yuan per 500gm...

Incredible!

Mostly I live off the Uni canteen, but as the canteen closes over winter break, I'm going to have to cook for myself for a month before disappearing on that tour of the local provinces.

From my time in SE Asia I learnt it was best not to ask about what food was before trying it as it often biased your sense of taste. Amazing what Chinese in particular can cook up from what Westerners consider inedible :p

The one meal I did feel squeamish about after finding out what it was was monkey. Little too close to cannibalism I think [:0]

It's amazing what I could cook up in NZ that city slickers would consider inedible :D

Eel fresh from the stream, possum kebabs and stew, magpie pie...

The chinese just go a little further down the same track ;) so far no problems eating what they serve up :D I'm looking forward to trying a chinese mums homestyle cooking when ZiXin takes me to see her home while I'm in Guilin :D

I'm guessing you're in for a treat. The Chinese put great significance on the quality of meals they present to guests. Enjoy :)

I certainly hope to...

And on that note, I'm signing off from the computer cafe here and heading to the light rail/monorail station 75 Metres from my door (convenient public transport or what?!?!) to see a friend off home for the holidays.

... and Chinese mums generally are SUPER KEEN on their daughters marrying non-Chinese men. They want to spare them what they are going through: a life controlled by their MIL Chinese men see it differently, though.

Yep, those Chinese girls are getting more and more valuable. But still - these girls don't want to marry Chinese men in general.

In some regions there are 10 or more men to every young woman.
