Computer help was created by Clods
A while ago something happened to my computer, and I could only open it in safe mode. It runs XP. Opened it in safe mode, and ran all the virus checkers, malware programs etc. Still would only open in safe mode. Tried reinstalling windows, XP, and newer version. Was unable to do so.

Computer has been sitting there for a while. Ordered a new hard drive to install. Finally got it in there, but cannot install windows.

So the problem isn't with the hard drive at all. Maybe a start up or BIOS problem? I have no idea how to do anything about that. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

thanks

Back to basics...

You've installed the hard drive? Successful install?
Can you see it correctly in BIOS?

"Cannot install windows" means what? errors, won't start the install, won't read the CD?

He says

not 'cannot install windows' it loads up the installer fine, but u get to the screen which would normally show your partitions and u can select each one and do whatever with them from there, but instead of showing partitions it just show four counts of
"unknown drive"
'there is no disk in the drive'
i know instantly youd think okay hard drive problem but thats why i got the new one, making sure to get something similar to the old one for compatibility reasons of course. so i chuck the new one in and get the same. so that pretty much rules out hard drive considering you get the same with the hard drive with the new one i put in.

not sure what the problem is, havent spent much time on it but at a wild guess, considering the fact that i was trying to reinstall windows because the operating system appeared to be cream crackered (only ran in safe mode), and the symptoms here, i was thinking perhaps boot sector virus. but i dont know to be honest

And so it was a straight swap of the hard drive, same 2 cables, no changes?
Does the new hard drive spin up ok? normal sounds?
Does the new hard register and get recognised in bios?

Also make sure you have all USB devices disconnected, except keyboard and mouse. In particular this includes memory sticks, usb hard drive and printer if it includes media card slots.

Yes, direct swap like-for-like. No usb things attached. Same proplem with old drive an new drive - except old drive could start in safe mode, and of course new drive doesn't have any software on it yet to do that.

Both new and old drives come up with the "unknown drive" 'there is no disk in the drive' in the bios.

The computer has built in media card slots, but nothing in them.

Sounds more like a Hard Drive Controller issue, it's most likely bigger than either your or your son can handle, and more than most of us can help with from afar.
It could be a motherboard hardware failure, bios corruption, driver problems, or many other maladies, best give it to some local expert.
Your hard drive sounds like it still has all your data, and can be retrieved when you get up and running again.

Yes, I already backed up all the data while it was still installed. Thanks for trying.
