Yes, thanks, shared with with the DD. She's going to show it round at school tomorrow. Not sure what will come of it, but it's a good eye-opener explained very clearly.

Being on dial-up I dont bother with youtube. Is it about the possible fracking in Canty?

In so far as 'fracking' is related to Peak Oil
Incidentally from my point of view, as a past oil field contractor, the whole 'fracking' controversy is an emotive beat-up that although being relevant in some overseas (particularly US) situations poses little risk to the environment under New Zealand's typically much deeper oil bearing geological strata.

Organix, as shameful as it may sound on this website I have to say the pollution aspect of fracking is the least of my concerns. The exploration company freely acknowledges that fracking can cause seismic activity and that has me very 'emotive'. They do say it's nothing to worry about - nothing more than a 2.9! But I came across an item which said they had halted fracking in the UK after it caused a M3 quake. Further to that another item said the govt. is planning legislation to protect L&M from liability if there is an "OOOOPPPPS". Not only that but land owners will have no right of refusal or compensation if L&M want to set up their operation on private land.
I'm finding it very hard to find balanced info, I get either the offical company line or the Sky-is-Falling brigade. If you can and are willing to provide links which can properly educate someone (myself) who knows nothing about mining of any sort I would be gratefull. Untill then I will stick with the emotive beat-up. This does scare me very much, I have had it with earthquakes!!!!

Valmai, the amount of energy present in the hydraulic forces used in fracture geological oil bearing structures is miniscule compared to explosives commonly used in mining or quarrying operations.

Consider also that a 3,000m (3km) deep oil well is pretty much the limit of such exploration in New Zealand using current technology, and due to reservoirs here being shallower than that (most are less than 2km), whereas the 10km deep epicentres of the current Christchurch are considered very shallow by earthquake terms.

All in all the chances of hydraulic fracturing contributing to earthquake activity is probably much less likely than lunar (tidal) forces doing so, and in either case if the tectonic plates are that close to a release (a.k.a. earthquake) the contribution made by fracking would be only academic, and probably coincidental. :)

That does not reassure me. A lot of the eq's and a/s's have been much shallower than 10km's. If the contribution made by fracking is academic why would the mining company admit that it happens? Do you not understand just how people in Canty feel about the possiblity of more eq's let lone those caused by mining companies?
