Good or bad insect?

I make my own seed raising mix from sifted dirt and compost and while sowing lots of different seeds today notice my mix is teeming with 1mm - 2mm long white crawling insects (they don't appear to fly or jump just crawl). They aren't white fly!

Does anyone know what they might be? are they good or will they lie in wait for the seeds to germinate and then eat 'em. :D

Thanks.

Not a lot of info to go on in your post and probably difficult to get any useful photo.

I Googled white soil bugs and found this post with a great description of a possibly similar infestation. Sound the same as yours?

Thanks Organix That sounds like 'em but what are they, I might see if I can get a photo tomorrow but 1mm is pretty small!

Just went down for another look they are all through my compost and a photo is out of the question, they are far to small.

Silverfish?

They'll disappear, won't do any harm.

Could they be Enchytraeids, potworms, mites or springtails? these are all organism that aide with the decomposition of compost and waste. A handful of dolomite or lime or improved drainage can help. :)

Hi, Are they eelworms, these look like a wee piece of white thread, and wriggle in the soil like an eel. They eat the roots of plants. Cheers.

Without seeing them it's hard to say, but I bought in a load of growing medium from a local landscaping place last year and it had lots of little white creatures crawling in it, kind of cigar shaped with legs and 1-2mm long. As far as I know, they didn't harm my plants - went a whole season with no problems with anything apart from SLUGS.

I have what you describe Seaside. They aren't springtails, eelworms, but might be one of those Enchytraeids, I'm hoping they are one of those that friendlysarah describes.
