I remember doing a study on the Chinese goldminers in the Otago goldrush of the 1880s. They suffered quite a lot of injustice eg the European miners felt threatened by them so pressured the government into introducing a tax on chinese immigrants and limitations to the number allowed in etc etc. There was quite a lot of interesting things to learn about like how they lived in caves etc and mined successfully at the mining spots the Europeans had given up on. The Chinese were given an official apology by Helen Clark when she was Prime Minister. I found it quite interesting to research...

Simpkin, can you access the books you want via one of your local schools then? Many of them use a loan system from National Library

Did you know, that what you thought I said, was not what I meant :S

If he is willing to do some research on silver mining in Potosi (Peru) he would certainly find more injustice and cruelty than one really wants to know about.

Thank you for all the suggestions. We ordered books from Amazon about Diego Garcia, the Marshall Islands and the H-bomb tests in Aussie, between $12.95 and $24.99 each.

Library would have been better as they have older books which are out of print, too.
