I am looking for a basic accounting system for the LSB, as the LSB is a "hobby" I don't want to pay for software, unless it is a one off and very small amount.[;)]

Yes I know that I could use spreadsheets, but I would prefer something a wee bit more dynamic, so that I can run quarterly reports and see where all the money goes :p without having to number crunch the spreadsheets.

Does anyone have any suggestions on suitable software?

SQL ledger. Free, downloadable, opensource software but maybe a bit more than what you need.

SQL Ledger needs to be installed on a web server and is accessed via a browser.
I set it up a couple of years ago to have a play. It was way too complex for my needs and needed major modification to suit NZ accounting practice.

GST reporting is not required at this point. But it wouldn't hurt to have the capability.

SQL ledger is set up in my server at work. I can access it from my iPhone and a laptop anywhere. We have 2 small businesses and I use it for both. I set it up for both and it didn't really need any mods. Even handled the change in gst rate properly. I love it but it is a full on accounts package.

Have you checked with your accountant? Ours provided a comprehensive spreadsheet package that is compatible with their system. The package was free, that was until we got him to modify it to cope with Visa and Paypal transactions [:I]

You could try the microsoft money - sunset versions. I did the other week & it is really easy to set up, download all the bank statements, category assignment & the rest etc is also very easy. Just need to change the default base rate from USD to NZ before you start. Just google microsoft money & you will get to the free downloads.

Involving an accountant would add cost, not looking at doing that at this point.[;)]
