My Gateway PC running Windows 7 doesn't hold the correct time and date and at start-up I get a message about the battery. Is it a simple matter of replacing the battery on the mother-board?

The battery is known as the CMOS battery and is a CR2032 battery.

It can be replaced relatively easily. Make sure you have all power disconnected from the PC and try and keep some part of your body touching the computer case while you change the battery to discharge any static electricity you may have built up.

It would seem you are not alone. Have a look at this windows7themes.net/consider-replacing-yo...-7-solution-fix.html

Different issue. That article is about Windows 7 and Laptop Batteries. Murray's problem is on a desktop PC and a different issue. It is irrelevant what operating system it is running.

The CMOS battery in Desktops and Laptops is a small battery that ensures that the boot up settings (BIOS) are remembered when all power is removed from the PC/Laptop.

Thanks, upon reading closely the error message does refer to the CMOS battery so I'll get one tomorrow.

Holy Cow Batman. How old is your PC? if it's a Gateway I wouldn't have thought it would support windows 7. I think I dumped my last Gateway machine in about 1999.

Gateway still make computers. They have been part of Acer for the past 4 - 5 years

It's new!!! Well, probably about 6 months old as it was reconditioned.
