Holidaying overseas - money

Not sure what its like now, but in 1998 when my wife and I were in the USA we had travellers cheques. They were treated just like cash, we would take a $100us cheque to the corner store with our passport and they would give us $100 cash. It was a bit more difficult in Europe and the UK on the same holiday, we had to go to the bank or thomas Cook office. And an absolute pain in the a** in Vietnam and Cambodia a couple of years ago, had to go to the bank(find one) and it took about 45mins to do the transaction. Its a hard one, because you get charged like a wounded bull with anything other than cash.
