It's Quiet Here in Christchurch
This past week I had both a dentist and a doctor's appointment and at both places the receptionist asked me what we were planning for the weekend. I told them that we'll stay put. Her remark - 'you are the first person I'm asking who is staying in Christchurch.
The sky is cloudy with clear bits inbetween, we can see the moon and our kids have commented that it doesn't look bigger than usual. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

I went into a local supermarket for groceries, and the queues were very long - they went across the space before the shelving and then part way down the aisles between the shelves. Apparently the western supermarkets are not only busy because there are fewer on the east side that are open, but also some are busier because they have parking that is not in a building.
Later the neighbourhood had a barbecue at a local park, and had a fairly high turnout.
The traffic has been noticeably busy in the last week on this side of town too. Trips are much quicker by bicycle. Cars are in jams for 30-60 minutes on trips that would normally be 10 minutes. I wonder whether it is because many people are now working in buildings on the west side of the city.

So it's easy to call Ken Ring an idiot when you're sitting safe and sound in Northland or thereabouts. If you're right here in the midst of last month's devastation you're better safe than sorry. And although we stayed we prepared a bit better and if no quake happens these supplies will be there when the next one happens because the question is not 'if' but 'when'.

I can't imagine how scary things must be down there with the continuing aftershocks...

The real dangerous idiots are the ones who believed the Moon Man's nonsense in the first place.
