DLink access point help??? was created by highgirl
I've got a dlink access point which is working fine for two of the laptops in my house, however after over a year of working fine, has now stopped working for my mac.
Dlink support told me to download new firmware, which I did, but I don't know the access point IP address and the default one doesn't seem to work :confused:
The whole thing is becoming bigger than Ben Hur and I'm completely ignorant when it comes to IT stuff nowadays [
]
Can someone please help [

How to find the current IP address of the AP? Using a free tool, you can find all the active IP addresses on your network (try
Free IP Scanner
). Turn everything else on the network off (other computers, printers, phones, ipods etc), then what ever is left will be your AP. Then try to connect to the AP from a browser.
To get the default IP working, you have to reset the AP (and lose all your internal settings). The manual should advise how to reset it, something like 'unplug it, press and hold the reset button, plug in, keep pressing the reset button for 10 seconds' or something like that. Then the default IP should work, although to talk to it your computer must have an IP on the same subnet.
It's not really a job for someone self confessed as being not too savvy, is there someone else you can borrow to help you?
That said, I once bought an AP, where neither worked. Dead duck.

thanks for that...it worked and I got the address via my husbands computer because mine is a mac so the download didn't work on it.
For some stupid reason, even when I type the ip address into the browser, it will not bring up the access point...I'm starting to think I'll have to take it in and part with hard earned money to get the problem fixed [

These days, it's not worth fixing if it is a problem with the AP. Get another AP, or modem with wifi built in, it will be cheaper.
If it is a config/firmware problem, then you may get a cheap fix.

The problem is not the Access Point. If two machines are working fine off the AP then the problem has to be either a configuration or wireless hardware issue on the Mac .
