"Explorer Error " Help again please!

I have a problem with my laptop... every so often, at least 6 times a day, an error message comes up saying, Explorer has encounted an error and has to shut down... if I click the box off it comes up with "explorer will close", then everything on my desk top disappears and within seconds comes back again... however everything I have just done on my desk top goes back to how it was before I moved them, ie if I have just layed out my files for collating my clients on the desk top (as I do at end of week) the bloody things does it's error thing and everything I have just spent the last half hour doing is shot right back to where they were before I started (hope that makes sense) it only moves my icons and stuff on the desk top,it doesn't close any programmes I have open, ie word...
It's a nuisance factor. However I can drag the error box out of the way and carry on with my work, but I have about 10 mins before another more elaborate error box comes up and clears the desk top anyway.... the only new hardware I have put on my computer is to run a Canon MX700 multi scanner, fax, printer thingy...
Oh and if that's not enough for you to ponder, every now and again whilst I am on the phone, the fax overrides it and cuts me off, I can't shut the fax down without actually pulling the plug out of the wall... I have faxability, (two seperate phone numbers) on my one landline....
any suggestions??????

Now, as to why Explorer is crashing, I have no idea. I suggest you do a Google search and it may throw up some suggestions. However, there are a huge number of potential causes for a problem like this, and to solve it, you may have to:
- Remove any software recently installed
- Re-install Windows
- Or it could even be a hardware fault with your laptop, but from the symptoms described, I would say it isn't likely
Now, regarding the Phone/Fax thingy, we used to have FaxAbility on our phone line in Auckland. We used an HP OfficeJet and it took quite a lot of playing around before I finally managed to get the OfficeJet to automatically answer the phone, ONLY when a fax was coming in and not a normal phone call.
There are usually various settings you can try which are typically Manual or Automatic answering, Shared line with Answering Machine, etc, etc.
You will need to experiment with all the various settings which deal with the fax functions of your Canon, if you haven't already. Failing that, have a look at the Support section of Canon's web site for any information which may be relevant to your problem. And -- if ALL else fails -- call Canon's Tech. Support.
Maybe Wyseyes has struck similar problems to what you have described [?]

Re the Fax.... I have been through the manual/auto settings etc it all works fine but on occassions I'm on the phone and part way through the call the line goes "hollow" and I know the fax has interrupted the call. This shouldn't be happening as they are seperate numbers and the call has been made or answered manually by me! I may have to resort to the "Canon experts" lol

What windows and service pack? Computer speed and how much ram do you have? Do you run many programs at once?
Is it Windows Explorer crashing, or Internet Explorer? It looks like Win Explorer by the results, but need to be sure.
Treating the symptoms can be a little easier - as Grant says, forcing Windows to remember icon positions by restarting is one. There are other programs out there which will take a snapshot of the icon positions, and restore them on command or restart.
As for the actual windows positions, this is usually turned off by default. Goto Control Panel, Folder Options. Select the View Tab, then scroll down the options and look at "Restore previous folder windows at login". Turn it on. Hopefully this will keep you from having to rearrange things too often.
The fax stuff? Sorry, I have had the good fortune to say well away from Telecom's dodgy fax services. Not that it helps, but I feel a certain amount of pride in saying that. Not sure why.

I also can't help with the cause, worst case is a windows reload, best case is a dodgy driver or installed program which is causing instability. Try uninstalling all the canon software and drivers. Maybe there are newer ones available from the canon website. Bugger... will going back to manufactures specs be enough???
What windows and service pack? Computer speed and how much ram do you have? Microsoft Windows XP, 2002, service pack 2, oddly 384 MB ram. Do you run many programs at once? No

Hopefully this will keep you from having to rearrange things too often. It's more the nuisance factor of the error, I don't want to have to reboot every time I move a folder, I receive aging summaries from my clients and place them on the desktop to work with them, spread them out and bring down sub folders for the company I am dealing with, I get sorted then suddenly the bloody thing closes and all my folders shoot back to wenst they came, not leaving the desktop though..., I know I could change how I do things, but this works for me and until this error cropped upp it wasn't a problem

Here's how I handle the fax situation now:quote:Originally posted by Broomrider

- Use a Fax to E-mail service for received faxes (easy peasy, they just appear in my Inbox, which makes it easy to forward copies or save to your Hard Disk). Only print out those faxes that are really required in hard copy, thereby saving lots of ink and paper.
- Set the Fax machine to MANUAL ANSWER (and of course the phone never rings anymore with incoming faxes, so it never needs to answer)
- Cancel the FaxAbility service (because it's no longer needed) and save yourself some money

If you need to know any more details, feel free to post back here.
Cheers,
Grant.

OK -- there are a couple of different options for the fax service, depending on how many pages per month you typically receive. For me, it's not many, so I use a US-based service called Faxaway:quote:Originally posted by Broomrider
...yes please tell me from front to back in laymans terms how you do this... and what number do peeps ring to get my fax and... oh so many questions...[] I await your answer with anticipation..???

Because I never send any faxes through this service, the total cost is just US$1 per month

Initially they charge your credit card for US$10 and that credit sits in your account being whittled down US$1 each month until it reaches zero, then they charge you another US$10. I have been using this service for about 2 years now, and it's extremely reliable.
There is one small drawback being that the service is US-based so people sending you faxes need to send them to a US number which costs between 10 and 15 cents per page depending on which phone company you use.
If you receive a large number of pages, that might not be ideal, so you would be best to use MBox which can give you a local Auckland number:
www.mbox.co.nz/messagein.php?pid=messagein-pricing
This costs $15 per month for up to 400 received pages.
If you are outside the Auckland local calling area though, it will cost between 10c and 15c per page to send faxes via MBox, so you may as well go for Faxaway and save the extra $14 per month

There is a third option from TNZ Group that will give you a local number wherever you like:
www.tnz.co.nz/main.php?context=public&pa...aging-fax-faxtoemail
However, they charge $10+GST per month and then 20c+GST per page received.
So -- a few options for you to consider Broomrider, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
On balance, for my situation, I decided on Faxaway because I mainly receive faxes from just one person, and having programmed my US fax number into a Speed Dial button on their fax machine, it is very easy for them to use. It costs this person 12c or 15c per page depending on the day of the week when they send the fax, and the total cost is usually around $5 per month or occasionally as much as $10.
This is Dirt Cheap really and it saves having to worry about where I am going to be on any given day. Any faxes just turn up in my e-mail so I can view them via my laptop when out on the road or wherever [8D]
P.S. It might be a good idea to rename this thread to "Explorer Error and Fax to e-mail service" so anybody else can find this thread if they are interested.
Cheers,
Grant.

As for my error problem, I have decided to relocate my work off the desktop to another folder and work from there... yeah I know, took me long enough to work that one out.... [

Unless you see a folder called "Adult Links" [] in your Favourites folder, then this has absolutely nothing to do with your situation.

The error shown in the link is exactly as mine was , unfortunately over the last couple of days the problem had increased to the extent that I was spending more time trying to retify it instead of working
