Looking for good Western Country Music

Ok, I am coming out of the closet now. [:I] I like Western Music. Well or Country music? But I can't find any good one. I have three CDs Called "Country and Western Hits 1950 - 1959" and "1960 - 1969" and "1970 - 1979". But they are not what I am looking for. Too many love-shmooesi songs. Arrgh. I want music which makes you stomp your feet and want to call out "Yeeeehaaa!" I don't mind some "Lonely cowboy watches sunset" tunes. But a lot of the songs on above CDs are Pop Songs with a Country flavor.

So I now it is a strange request from a German Immigrant :D but do you have any good Western Cowboy Music you can recommend?

Cheers & Yeeehaaa! [8D]

Peter

P.S.: CD just plays "Jambalaya" from Johnny Russel. That's what I am talking about! Yeeehaa!

Maybe it's a bit too modern for your taste PNZ, but I like Lady Antebellum:

and Faith Hill:

www.digirama.co.nz/AlbumDetails.aspx?MediaID=684722

also Brooke Fraser's new single:

In fact, while you're at it, check out the entire Country Music genre on Digirama; you're sure to find something there:

You can listen to 30 second clips for free, so give it a try and see what you think :)

The Amazon listing for that album is worth checking out as the reviews include similar music in the 'Southern Rock" genre which is maybe a better description of what you're after :)

Personally I find Amazon a little pricey but use their samples to find what I'm after and then go looking in the big music stores on Ebay US

This may appeal. Check out "1922" (below the Jubilee album track listings) and see if you can remember where you've heard it [;)]

WE scored a few albums from Charlie a year or two back but it looks like they are a little hard to come by now.

May I suggest bluegrass? I'm not a particular fan of Western or Country Western, though there is a smattering of tunes that stand out for me, but bluegrass I love. Great foot-stomping, country feel to a lot of it, lots of fiddles and banjos and fun lyrics.

Me too mate. That is real music. I love Tex Morton New Zealand born and bred but he spent many years in Australia.

But hey I think this is the right week, old Percy down at Palmerston goes on air at Radio Puketapu every second Sunday afternoon from 2 to 6 and he plays heaps. Probably a little too much of Slim Dusty, but bloody good all the same.

Try to see iffin you can listen online. I have in the past but it seems to be down at the moment.

You know Neil Young of course? I guess he's Country and Western. Bit of a country crooner really.

My birth mother in Canada has just done her "Harvest Moon" ceremony where every harvest moon in September she camps by a lake under the Steeples (part of the rocky mountains) and blasts Neil Young as the moon rises.

Last time I went with her (2002), I had a baby and a four year old and we were camping in below zero temperatures, and I lay awake all night listening to the coyotes howl thinking they were wolves, and worrying that a bear would smell the baby's milk and rip through the tent. My mother and her husband were safe sleeping in the back of her ute. Was fun apart from that. But that's my most enduring memory of Neil Young's music.

Edited to add that I just re-read your original post Peter, and sorry, Neil Young is very soulful, but makes you want to jump off a cliff rather than shout "Yee Haw", so can't recommend him for your purposes.

"Western Swing" could be a genre you will enjoy - it's the yeeeehaw dance-type stuff;
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_swing

Asleep at the Wheel are one of my favourites (big band lots of instruments) - whereas the OH prefers the Willie and Waylon (more the ballad types).

PS I love Charlie Daniels Band - they are classified "Country Rock" - less of the slide guitar and more fiddle.
