Wondering if anyone can help? I have a vw beetle with 88,000 km. When we bought it a couple of years ago we took out the warranty thingy. It went into the garage a couple of months ago as the engine light was on. It turned out it was something to do with the automatic gear box. When I got it back it was even more broken - the garage hadnt fixed something properly - they took it back and mended it. Anyway when I was driving it it felt like it had forgotten when to change gear - it changed really late. Me being stupid thought oh it;s prob ok. Hubby drove it for the first time this week and said its not right so took it back to garage. They have called and said it needs a whole new transmission at wait for it..$5000. Oh and the warranty people say they will only pay for it if it isnt wear and tear. At this mileage surely it cant be. It's not like you have a choice when you change gears on an automatic. I did some searches on the net and it turns out this is a known prob in these cars and someone in NZ said the warranty didnt pay out as it's a known fault - but there is no mention of this in the policy. We are taking it to another garage for a second opinion today -but have any of you any advice?
I mean what was the point of us paying more for a warranty?? Please help - we don;t have $5000

Oh dear :( I have a VW Passat which is an absolutely lovely car but ever since we first bought it home it has had a power steering leak. Just a small one and as it was going to cost around $1500 to fix we just lived with and kept topping up the tank.

Anyway, one time when I took it in for a service the mechanic rung me and said "you have a huge problem, there is a massive leak in the transmission and you need to take it to a transmission specialist immediately". Naturally I panicked and thought we were also going to be in for a $5k bill!! So I take it to the specialist who hoists it up and says "there is no leak in the trans, only small power steering leak" . Duh!

Definitely take it to somebody else and even to a transmission specialist, hopefully one who does euro cars as I have found they usually know what they are talking about. You're right, I can't see how that would be wear and tear on a car with such low mileage. Perhaps you could get a transmission specialist or a mechanic to put that in writing and then provide it to the the insurance comapny? Best of luck!

As I said I love my VW but my God its expensive to maintain!

BTT: I would advise giving Eastern Automatics in Auckland a call:

yellow.co.nz/whitepages/search/auckland/...rn+Automatics-1.html

I went to see them when I had problems with the transmission in the Ford Falcon Ute we had a couple of years ago. They really knew their stuff, and had all sorts of European cars in there for repair. Not many Japanese ones though -- does this tell you something?

They are specialists, and auto trans are all they do, whereas the local guys in Northland are jacks of all trades usually. Eastern Autos will no doubt be familiar with the model, and the issue you are experiencing, and will be able to give you the best advice.

Let me know how it goes :)

The guy who rebuilt the auto in my Falcon (at 387,000 km) hates jappas. He can't get his big hands in to work on them. To rebuild the four speed auto in the Falcon cost $2700 about five years ago. Your VW should be barely run in at 88,000. Must be a Friday afternon car.

thanks folks.
Well the gearbox has been taken out and sent down to some specialist somewhere [:0] They are very aware that we have the warranty and that 'wear and tear' doesn't seem to be covered so are going to work their report carefully so as not to include these words! I suppose all we can do now is cross our fingers. A lot!
My Dh spoke to the garages and both of them said that at these km's it is incredibly unlikely to be wear and tear anyway. Here's hoping.

Fingers (and toes) crossed for you BTT :)

The situation now sounds a lot more encouraging than your earlier post. Let us know what transpires.

all the finger and toe crossing must have worked!
Just got some great news - warranty is covering the cost - it's not wear and tear at such low mileage! Whew! We need to pay for the transmission fluid (which is expensive but not $5000!!) and the freight - think we can cope with that :D Such a huge relief.
Thanks for all your advice!
