If you are a library member you could go in the draw to win a $50 book voucher - just answer a few simple questions on your library use at www.surveymonkey.com/s/VJZDCGR .
This survey is part of a research project that is being carried out by a Library and Information Studies student as part of her BA. If you have any questions please email library.researcher10 @gmail.com.

Don’t delay – the survey closes at the end of July.

Done. Feel strongly about paying for books when the Library is costing me a large chunk of my rates. Mine charges $4 for new book releases, magazines and DVD with everything else free to the best of my knowledge. Internet charge is $2/15 minutes - not that I use it.

I wish someone could come up with a plan whereby if you return your books early, you could get a credit that could and would only be used to offset your late books!

I do like that Bookinopolis is now on line and you can renew your books for one further period over the internet. That is great.

Ours charges a bit for magazines, DVDs, CDs and (I think) very new releases. I love seeing how much our libraries are used now. And yes, the Hamilton ones are on internet as well so can check availability and request books and also renew online...

Didi, I agree. Our rates aren't peanuts and we don't get a great deal for them compared to our urban counterparts; no rubbish collection, no water, road graded once every 4-5 years. I'm not complaining much - I choose to live out here, but I do resent then having to pay for library books.

Yay I'm in for free things!
I uses the library to vet books before buying them. If it's a really good resource book then I will add it to my wishlist.
I hear what you are saying about rates and not getting anything back.
We pay for recycling and rubbish and there is no council funded rubbish or curbside recycling!
As for the library, magazines are charged for, and it costs $1 per item to reserve something. Everything else is free tho not sure about internet as never use it.
the fees for lost or overdue books are horrific $3 admin charge to send you a letter on top of the fee.

we have a great library service. We can use all 4 libraries in the district. Fiction books cost 50 cents, but large print and non fiction are free. Cheaper magazines are free but more expensive ones are $1. Reserving an item is 50 cents and DVD rentals are $2.

We also have a wonderful free internet service.

I'm a little worried that charges will start being introduced as the council has re structured and the new District Librarian is throwing her weight around already - a new fee of 50 cents has been inroduced for requesting a book from another branch....silly when the courier does the rounds anyway. Just hope this isnt the tip of the ice berg.....I only get one or two books a month out of the fiction books as sometimes even 50 cents can be a bit much but at present I have over 50 non fiction and large print books out! And you can return any books to any branch for free regardless of where you got them out - unlike Wellington who charge $1 per item for returning to the wrong branch!

Replied by sod on topic Chance to win a $50 bookvoucher
Thanks for that, cant say things about rates as we are in town :) but I get banned from book stalls/fairs as is :D by the boss as I can always find a lot I need to read. We use our library ever week and get 10 to20+ books/mags out a month easy so a charge would be bad, bad, bad for us:(

Having time is a measure of enthusiasm:rolleyes:

$1.50 here to request a book, which I don't mind. And no charge for returning it to the wrong library, thank goodness!

If you have any friends that you think would be happy to do it - please send them the link www.surveymonkey.com

And as an aside, if public libraries which are supported by taxpayer funding, want to start charging for items, then scrap them I say.

I too have had enough of being penalised for being a few days over with a return. go after the blighters who don't bother to return books at all....
