My son's laptop (3-yr old Celeron powered HP530) keeps turning off of its own accord. At first I though that it was because he was using it on his lap so much that it was over-heating, but today when I tried to install a new hard drive it kept turning off even when placed on my desk. It's plugged into mains powered and the battery is fully charged, but still gets temperamental at random times. Any ideas?

What is the setup in the Power Settings in the control panel?
What about the bios? Does it have any power down settings enabled?

I can't remember how long I have had my HP laptop, must be about the same age, but the battery is well and truly on the way out and doesn't hold a charge as it once did.

Thanks DiDi, I try those pointers. I actually took to it with the vacuum cleaner and got a surprising amount of fluff out of the fan grid, but i's still stopping. I'll leave it until tomorrow and give it another vacuum as well as trying it without the battery.
