At a bit of a loss where to begin, though have made enquiries at the Blue Skies facility in Kaiapoi. I need more options to explore.

I'm helping organise an AGM for next year. We are on a tight budget, so are looking at 'out of the square' options. Ideally a meeting hall with attached kitchen or dining area, or near a suitable restaurant and motels, and not hugely distant from the airport. Kaiapoi area would be the furthest afield we'd want to get. People will be coming from out of town, so would need lodgings nearby.

Cheers

School halls are a good option and usually quite cheap.
What is out at McLeans Island? I haven't been there for years but there used to be lots of clubs etc that had their own facilities, maybe some one there would hire to you?

Hi, thanks for the replies. I have thought about those options, but as there will be a number of people coming from out of the area, and flying in from the N I, and in need of accommodations, I'm trying to think of more centrally located places to minimise the amount of travel by car needed, and also to give the people who are visiting some options for other activities for when we aren't having meetings.

In the past we held one at a conference centre/hotel and it was REALLY expensive. We're trying to avoid that this time 'round.

Cheers

Hi Andrea,

I'll make some enquiries for you (my physio told me that they hired a hall not far from here for their daughter's wedding and it was only 15 Dollars per 4 hour hire) - a few years ago, though. When and for how long would you need it? Responsible adults only? You could email me with some more details.

There are several community Halls, and other relatively cheap venues available for hire listed on the Community Information Christchurch site CINCH, but the link I tried to add times out. Try librarydata.christchurch.org.nz/web2/tra...een=CinchRecord.html
and do a search for hall meeting room to find them.

Ones that are available through the council booking system can be found on their website

Andrea, how big is your AGM likely to be.
There's a community hall in Yaldhurst at the corner of Pound Rd (Yaldhurst Memorial Hall). It's likely to be cheap.

It's a bit old a a little run down outside but there's heating and a reasonably well stocked kitchen you can use including an stove if you need to heat up some nibbles (or mulled wine!) and kettle for tea/coffee etc. It's one of the Council ones. There's a "Robbies" bar/restaurant a couple driveways down too, so people could meet for dinner before/after.

As for accommodation, I think theres a little motel on russley, or the ones right by the airport would still be close (also some fairly 'new' ones at Roydvale ave near work here), for those who dont ming going up further, Yaldhurst Rd becomes riccarton rd, so folks could go up that way and find restaurants and hotels near the mall.

Why dont you try somewhere like the Equestrian hotel in Hornby. They have a meeting room , dont think they charge anything for rental, they just get the bar takings. they also have reasonable accomodation rates.Might be worth a call :)

I can recommend the Abberley Park hall which has a well-stocked kitchen and zip, nice toilet, lots of chairs and tables. And close to motels on Papanui Rd (within walking distance).

Thanks, everyone - great ideas! Now I have a lot more to work with.

It's going to be about 50 people at the meeting and more for meals/gatherings, Jen.

Cheers

There's a rugby club in Kaiapoi, that's a decent size with a kitchen.

Matches are on Saturday mornings, so the clubs would be in use then.

You could also look at some of the churches in the area. Often their halls are not used weekdays or Saturday and even on Sundays some will only use one room. Most have kitchens and some even have catering groups who might do the meals/teas etc for you. And many churches are strapped for cash so would be happy to rent a hall.

Another thought is there is a holiday park with nice cabins (and probably a few B&Bs and motels) in south new brighton, and probably a five or ten minute walk along the reserve from the holiday park, there's a scout hall. The scout hall is nothing flash, but would probably not be expensive to hire if you can (for that reason). The holiday park will have communal cooking areas. And it's a lovely area (I lived there for a few years).
