Big one at about 8.16am (all the stock galloping in circles) - did you feel it Louimay?

We felt it in Christchurch. Haven't felt such a strong one for quite some time.

It was 40 km north of Hanmer Springs, magnitude 5.6 at a depth of 70 km ( www.geonet.co.nz )

Yes I did feel it GBPeter. I am still a bit nervy. I was hiding under a doorframe whilst it was going on. LOL I hate them.

Heard it 2 or 3 seconds before feeling a strong rolling motion. A loud roar coming straight down 88 Valley[:0]

They were talking about it on the National Program on radio.

nope, didn't feel a thing here down on kaitorete spit, i keep hopeing to feel my first earthquake, but nothing in a whole year.

A big earthquake with the strength of 8.1 on the Richter scale has hit Lebanon.
Two million Lebanese have died and over a million are injured.
The country is totally ruined and the government doesn't know where to start with providing help to rebuild.
The rest of the world is in shock.
The United States is sending troops to help.
Saudi Arabia is sending oil.
Latin American countries are sending supplies.
The small island country New Zealand is sending sheep, cattle and food crops.
The European community (except France) is sending money.
The Asian continents are sending labour to assist in rebuilding infrastructure.
The Australians, not to be outdone, are sending two million replacement Lebanese.
