Moan: Dyson vaccum cleaners...

Have had our Dyson for about 5 years. We use the turbo head all the time as the dogs and cats live inside. Its great for picking up their hair...and the muck DH manages to tramp in....

Well the turbo head has lost its little rubber bits and the brush wont spin when in the normal vaccum position, and it has lost its suction. This is despite me taking it appart every now and then to clean as per the Dyson instuctions. Its simply worn out.

So I got a quote to replace the head - $194.00!!!!!!

Unbeleavable for a bit of plastic! Its not like I have that kind of money sitting around being on a limited income so guess who will be using the normal vaccum head on the carpets, followed by the upholstery brush to get the hair that the normal head dosent pick up. Or ban the animals and DH and his size 13 feet.....hehe

Size 13 feet seem to cause a lot of problems! The ones around here are generally bare and carrying everything from everywhere into the house. Fortunately I anticipated problems and we have little carpet, except some old recycled stuff which doesn't matter.

Some people buy whole vacuum cleaners for that price! :O

Our Dyson developed a similar problem but a trip to the O-ring shop for a length of 3mm rubber rod for about $2.50 solved the problem :D

Yes those big feet have lots to answer for - I love it when he takes his gumboots off at the door, then rushes outside in his sox for some reason and comes back in with dirty wet sock foot prints all thru the house.....grrr.

That could be something to do with why I have been pulling up corners of the carpets in out of sight places to see what the floor boards are like....cant wait to get rid of the carpets!

and yes for the price I could have a totally new machine - the sales person said Dyson and Electrolux were the dearest for parts.

Keep in mind that the salesperson makes more money out of selling cheaper new vacuum cleaners often, than reliable ones infrequently

We have had to buy some spare parts for our Dyson over the years but we go direct through their website, here is the link, showing turbo head at $130 including overnight courrier www.dyson.co.nz/store/parts.asp?product=DC19-TURBINE
we have been quite happy with the service from them.

Before you go spending over $100 try replacing the rubber 'gaskets' with 3mm rubber rod (less than a metre of 3mm from memory) from Shuk Engineering Supplies or similar. The original sealing strips loose their spongeyness and leak so there is no vacuum produced to turn the brushes or suck. Obviously clean any hair out of the brush spindles also.

I actually used a sealing strip out of a Systema food storage container first but the rod diameter is slightly too big but did solve the problem slightly.

I replaced my Dyson turbine head a lot cheaper than that. They had all the parts and stuff for Dyson's at
Mendit.co.nz Mendit Shop Dyson Parts

I asked and they said they had the parts in stock to repair the turbine heads too .e.g. the turbine head belt.

Good luck
