Avast! Trojan Horses running amok!

Anyone else been tied up in the stupid Avast! update fiasco? I was happily working away on my computer when all hell broke loose and there were messages popping up about a Trojan Horse affecting all manner of files.

Coincidentally I heard while tidying up my stuff at school the other day, that their server had a couple of trojans recently found, and imagined that in my tired carelessness last night, I'd managed to infect my computer when bringing some files home.

Fortunately I quarantined any infected files, rather than deleting them, so when it came to light that it was an Avast! programming error (which seems to have caused all sorts of real hassles for lots of users), I was able to restore them from the quarantine chest and all is working normally again.

It has been otherwise an excellent programme, but this was a serious glitch for many.

Oh, poobum.... in desperation I delete one of the warnings. Yes, there were quite a few.

It seems to depend on when you turned your computer on - if you were out all day yesterday and didn't get the first update at around noon, and then turned on after the second one at around 5pm, you'd have missed the excitement. They fixed it up quite quickly (five hours or so probably wasn't quick enough for some though) and so many people were unaffected.

I wasn't sure what to do with all the alerts, so anything which wouldn't move to the chest, I fortunately chose to "ignore", rather than delete, so my computer still goes just fine.

Apart from that one glitch, it's still my virus program of choice, operating simply and well without my needing to do anything about it most of the time.

This is so weird. I was going to download Avast yesterday as I am sick of AVG8 slowing my computer down. The phone rang - I had to go out so didn't do it. Phew! That would have been a scary day!

I used to use AVG and got tired of various aspects - I think it was having to remember to get it to update and so on. Avast! just does it all automatically, whenever an update is available and I'm online. I'd still highly recommend it. After such an egregious error, I doubt they'll make a similar mistake again!
