:D Aren't they great? We live in town but just down from a patch of native bush and on quiet nights we can hear them sometimes too.

My other fave is the grey warbler, you never see them but they sound just great. [:I]

They are so neat alright MM:D Sadly we don't have any in my area
:(

Grey Warbler Tigger[:0] I have them in my yard and they just about drive me nuts some, most days. Honestly, to have to listen to the same tune over and over from daylight till dark is too much most days. They're such a tiny bird that it amazes me they can keep singing for hours on end. I often ask Gerry to catch them and remove their bl$$dy batteries:( They love my big Walnut tree which is right by the back door and they seem to follow me out into the paddock where the big weeping willows are.

Send me your address Tigger and if I catch one I'll send it your way;)

Cheers:)

During the day, MM. I still love them, Midge, haven't got sick of the noise yet :D tuis are the other ones I love, as we don't really get them in town here and when I do hear them elsewhere it is such a treat.

We have Moreporks here too in the national park.

Aren't they the bird that if it lands on your roof (according to Maori legend) its supposed to indicate some sort of bad luck/death in the family the next day?

We lack all the native singers here. I think the Franklin area was basically flattened for market gardens so there are few areas of native bush and none around here.

I love the warblers too Tigger. They fly so high I can't see them but every so often I hear them.

Last night both Kim and I shot off in opposite directions to find out what the terrible crying was. I immediately thought of my goats. Nothing from them, in fact they were all sitting calmly out in their paddock and only got up when I went out with the torch.

I think it was a ruddy Pukeko. What a noise! It sounded to me like a really sick, on it's last legs, goat crying. Of course, as soon as we went outside, it stopped it's noise.

I'd love to hear Moreporks around here.
The Weka that live in the bush around the Kaiteriteri camping ground used to have one sitting straight up in bed in the middle of the night. Sounded like someone being murdered.

My Aunt gave me a CD of native bird sounds from Mt Bruce down near Wellington. It's not quite the same but at least I get to hear them whenever I want. Love that Aunt to bits!

Swaggie, I heard it was the Piwakawaka, Fantail. If one flies into your house it is supposed to be a sign that someone will die.

We do get those around here, they drive the cats nuts, good on 'em!

They get the cat up the tree and then dance around to the outermost branches where the twigs won't hold the cats weight. ;)

We have Moreporks too - the hill we live on is called Ruru which is the Maori name for the Morepork. We mainly here them from dusk onwards. We've had a few visit our garden, when we peer at them out of the window [:I] They're much smaller than I imagined...

We're lucky to have lots of tuis and other native birds but I'm not familiar with the grey warbler, I'll have to try to find a recording of it.

Cheers
Kate

we're really lucky where our place in Wellington is - we live in Karori and even though we are almost as far from the bird sanctuary in Karori as you could be we have lots of tuis, moreporks (though they were in the park before the sanctuary) and heaps of grey warblers - all lovely to hear. On the LSB there is a bird (or birds) that I think must be bellbirds - definitely not tuis, even imitative ones - odd as there is no bush nearby, only a few pines as shelter belts, and lots of olives and grapevines. These are really lovely to hear - they sing and sing and sing if that is the right word!
Kate the grey warbler sounds like our puppy Max did when he was a bit smaller, first thing in the morning - you know the way they cry when you have to get out of bed that instant to take them outside otherwise there will be an accident. Many mornings I leapt out of bed and tore downstairs only to find Max asleep but the warbler going.

1 Border collie, 1 Huntaway, 2 Lhasa Apsos, Suffolk and arapawa ewe crosses, an Arapawa ram,an East Friesian ewe , 5 cats, 42 ducks , 1 rooster and 30 hens, 5 geese, 12 goats, 2 donkeys, 2 house cows, one heifer calf, one bull calf, 3 rabbits and lots and lots and lots of fruit trees...

I think you know roughly where we are over there Yakut, we have a pair of Tuis living in the pine trees, which Hubby was surprised to see. they are still there everytime we go back and its an unusual sound.

Better than our aussie screeching cockies that always know when our bird feeder has been topped up.
Mouse (1 year old small burmese) nearly had one 2 weeks ago, it was so busy watching us in the dining room, it forgot to look underneath itself, and Mouse stretched up and "patted" it with one of her paws....:D you should have heard the bird yell in fright.

They are so tame here MM, and growing in numbers, perhaps they are coming in from the bush where food in places has become non existant. The ones we see in NZ seem very shy in comparison.

I think they're great, noisy but good to see. There are peacocks somewhere too, we can hear themmin the evening, wither that or spoooks out there somewhere doing one of her impressions!
